I used that technique for a short while, but the reason I say short while I found clamping in the vise was squirmy with two round surfaces so I quickly changed to a pipe nipple with a small shallow groove ground in it for the rod to go into rather than using a socket.

To remove flux from the rod, chuck the rod in a drill and using light to moderate pressure with a pair of pliers pull the rod through the jaws while rotating the rod. One trip and about 10 seconds does it for the most part. Follow up with your favorite method to make it shine. 150 grit sand paper or emery tape is usually good enough for my work.
