Heard about a guy coming out of a mini mart after buying a pack of smokes and was hit by a bus. Only goes to show smoking is bad for your health:laughing:

Those who would trade freedom for security do not deserve nor will they ever obtain either..

What an enlightend individual.

Freedom to choose please.

Sounds good on paper/in utopia land, but what about individual responsibility?

My niece works in hospital billing. All those people lifeflighted from atv/motorcycle crashes with no insurance jacks up my insurance rates. In my state for every $1 of actual services, the hospital has to bill out to private insurance $1.77 to make up for all the uninsured who walk away from their bills/declare bankruptcy

Why should I have to pay higher insurance for all these idiots who 1. don't wear a helmet and 2. don't think they need insurance.

Maybe the law should be about the insurance instead of the helmet I never said you should pay for them but why do we feel responsible for people who are not responsible for themselves.

Regarding Insurance and responsibility,

Are you saying that any under insured person with a head injury (sans helmet) should be denied care, regardless of the cause of the injury? After all, helmets of all types are readily available to all. Kayakers, bicyclists, rock climbers, snow sports etc etc. The injury could have been lessened, and so the injured was obviously acting in disregard for their own welfare.
While the same injury "with a helmet worn" should fall in the "standard care" category?

I just find that a bit exclusive. Sounding a lot like "It can't happen to me" socioeconomic elitism.

I'm much more angered at being forced to house, clothe, feed educate and provide health care for non-citizens that enter this country illegally...

Publicly-provided, universal health care, like we have in Canada, also changes the equation. There is a much stronger incentive for government to pass laws that undermine peoples' ability to (legally) do risky things. Whether it be helmet laws or additional taxes (or prohibitions) on smoking (or any other "unhealthy" activity, for that matter), any resulting reduction in burden on the health care system is a DIRECT savings to taxpayers in general.

as we all should have learned in drivers ed, "driving is a privilege not a right". when the SHTF.

Is paying taxes that build and maintain roadways a 'privilege'?
I think not.
