Removing fence posts

I have a DK50, with FEL. I just pulled some gate posts up the other weekend. They were 4x4s, lightly concreted. I used the FEL (actually grapple). Pulled up to post lowered grapple, wrapped chain around base of post and around grapple then lifted. Popped right out.

No matter how you lift the posts out, I would dig out around the concrete first to knock it loose.

Agree with this.

Our best success comes from pushing/pulling the post with the FEL. When loose, we wrap chain around the base of the post and connect it to the FEL. Lift the bucket to resistance, then move the tractor enough to center the post in the hole (ie to prevent the post rubbing hard against the wall of the posthole. )

Once the chain is tight from lifting the bucket and the post is centered, curl the bucket to pull it out. The bucket roll has more force than lifting the bucket or the 3 PH.

an if you use your fel to pull the post up,make sure you have weight on the rear end so the rear wheels dont come off the ground.

*ughs* broken posts right at ground level. *grumbles*

what others have said, is what i have done and has worked.

some problems i have had. is to wet of dirt. and the stinking post was being sucked back into the ground. and i had to push post back and forth several times. to work the bottom of the post up and out.

personally prefer use of backhoe. so even if a post does snap off at ground. i can just do a quick few swipes of backhoe have post out. and area re packed down and fairly smooth. and ready to move on to next post.

Getting my mx5100 hst in about a week. First order of business will be to widen the entrance gate to the property.

I dropped off the travel trailer saturday and barely made it through the gate b/c I did not have room to straighten out the trailer much after the left turn.

I was thinking either chain to fel or drawbar and chain with 3 point hitch. I hear the 3 point has more lifting power.

I need to do this soon to get my boat through the gate. The boat is wider than travel trailer and the boat trailer itself is longer than the travel trailer.

I think the gate post has cement and I doubt the other posts would have cement.

Anyone tried this with this size tractor?? I am new to all this farm stuff and this is my first time using a tractor.

I actually use a handyman jack and a length of chain with grab hooks. I wrap the chain around the post twice and attach the grab hook to the chain. I put the chain on the lift arm of the jack and jack the post out of the ground.

I agree with this. I have also used a hydraulic floor jack. With the lifting plate pushed up against the chain wrapped around the bottom of the post. This will usually want to push the post the opposite way from the side you are trying to lift. Park your tractor with FEL against the post to keep it straight. Once you have the post moving good, your FEL can lift the post out easy. Just remember to put a good board down under the front of the jack to keep it from sinking into the ground.

The added plus with using a jack, they are rated in tons where as your FEL is rated in pounds. Work smart, not expensive.

We removed alot of fence post's after the cattle were sold. We used the fel too, wrapped chain around post down low and as we pulled up rock the post alittle, Just watch out if it comes up fast that you don't let it swing back into that nice new tractor :thumbsup:Try and pull it straight up , maybe digging around it some if it's giving you a hard time , just my :2cents: Have fun stay safe:thumbsup:

I agree with MrWhippy, the bucket roll has more force that actually using FEL to lift. I have knocked down a number of dead trees using bucket roll.

If youre widening you may get by with just leaving the concrete in .. esp if it is below ground level. I have had wood posts pull right out of the concrete before the concrete will come up. I was replacing posts. Ended up driving the new post right down into the hole in the concrete.
