JD4300
I'm new here. Read up on several threads regarding this topic. Attempting to troubleshoot the following: Tractor is parked. Turn the key, get dash lights, hour meter display, and a distinct click on the right side of the tractor, but it fails to turn over. In the past when this has occurred, could press the fwd/rev pedals/or press the brake, put on the parking brake & release it a few times and it would start. Have not been able to clearly ID what ( if any of these maneuvers) allowed it to start. I now think all these actions may have been independent. A year ago, replace the seat switch; also replaced the brake switch. Did not resolve this problem. Check fuse panel and all fuses OK. Today, removed the neutral start switch, continuity tested it, and it worked fine. Replaced a worn pin plug on the ground wire (green one). Put the same switch back in, plugged the switch wires into the lead from the main harness (On the rt side of the tractor just below the floor board). Turned the key, same situation. I get power, a click, but it does not turn over. BTW I did replace the battery 1 wk ago w/ a new hibernator. This tractors been down 2 weeks now. From the other threads it doesn't sound like a thermistor. Any thoughts?

I would check for voltage to the starter solenoid and back track from there. If you have the voltage at the solenoid terminal I would check for continuity across the solenoid windings as it may have opened up. If you don't have the voltage at the solenoid you need to trace backwards until you find it. You can also verify that it is working at the switch too. Somewhere in between is your problem. The click you are hearing is likely the fuel solenoid which tells me that most of the interlocks are working. I assume the pto switch is not on, if it is you need it off to start the tractor.

Let us know how it goes.

I had a similar problem few years ago. Needed to tap the forward or reverse pedals with my foot before it would start. There is a switch (I think it's called the neutral switch) under the floor board by the pedals. Not easy to replace but check it out ... may be the problem.

Remove each injector, carefully insert a stick of dynamite in each........

Sorry, I just had too:D

Are you sure you are getting full voltage to the starter.

You need to measure the battery voltage when you try to crank it. Everything you are telling me tells me you don't have 12 volts at the starter, and the place to start looking at that is the battery.... I know you replaced it recently, maybe it is dead because your chargine system failed....

Update: Thanks to all for your interest & reply. JD4300 HST is running again. The bottom line-it was the neutral switch. JD placed it in an inconvenient spot near the transmission. I removed it, cleaned it off, cleaned the contacts, and tested for continuity. OK--or so I thought. Reinstalled it. No dice. Back to square 1. Once installed, I tested continuity again through the leads to the switch. Open. Crawled back underneath w/a small screwdriver and pressed the button just a bit, circuit closed. After 1788 hrs the switch is in fact worn. The bearing (worn also) that should close the circuit by depressing the button when the pedals are in neutral does not fully engage the switch. I unplugged the switch, ran a jumper wire between the male ends of the plug from the main wire harness to bypass the switch and it started strong as it ever did. Mind you this is a temp repair until the the new 1 comes in. But it's back to work. This explains why I had continuity w/ the switch out of the tractor. Again, thanks for a great resource and your interest!!
