Our first tractor as a kid was a Farmall Super A. The ONLY (conveinant) way you could get on it was from the right/front. Look at one and you will know.

Like most, my tractor has a step on the left side. Sometimes, I wish it had one on the right as well.

In some of the positions I get into, it is more convenient to get on and off on the right, and I do that. I have trouble with bumping the stick sometimes, especially the loader curl, if I'm not being careful enough. Today, while using the hoe, I had a bunch of muck on the left side of the tractor, and thus mounted and dismounted from the right several times. Fortunately, my 48 backhoe has a step and grab bar available on each side. I can easily use whichever side is convenient.

Depending on how the tractor is sitting relative to the uneven ground, it is sometimes quite a big step to mount on the right side. I weigh about 235 and I'm not fond of the amount of flex I have in my plastic JD fender and grab bar. I tend to grab the loader post at the same time, and do most of my pulling on that as I mount. I try to keep the excess grease wiped clean at the top of the loader post because I found I was always getting into it.

My first tractor, as a kid, was a 2011 Kioti DK50se and it has a step on BOTH SIDES and the FEL joystick is 99% out of the way, and I don't step on the HST pedals (lots of floorboard space).

HEY! Ithink this is the FIRST Thread where it might be good to be a n00b!

one of my quarter horses lost an eye last year, his left one. since then we have retrained him to being approached from the right for walking, or the farriar, or mounting. took a lil bit for the poor guy to get used to it.. but not much choice eh?

Sorry to hear about your horse's loss of his eye. I sincerely hope that he healed well.

Me too. Glad his owner his sensitive enough to have retrained him--has to be less stressful, on him, I would think, to see what's coming.

Best of luck to him (and his riders).

it was a traumatic couple of days, and we tried to save the eye, but it perferated quickly. one night I fed him and turned him out.. the next morning I noticed his eye was injured with a lil scratch/dot on the surface over the pupil.. called his local vet.. they couldn't fit him in :( ( I changed vets by the way over this ).. I called an emergency mobile vet who came out by lunch.. sedated him and looked it over.. gave him some meds and then we went over treatment.. treatment in the field had about a 10% chance to save the eye.. treatment in a facility, maybee 30/70.. and if it went south it would have to be removed asap. I told them my local vet would not see me for 3 days!!! they made some calls and got me in with a very good high end facility that normally is kinda 'invitation only' with the 'race horse people' anyway.. they got me in for an afternoon appt.. 5:30pm. Poor horse.. had a flat on the interstate with him loaded.. got there on time.. however, they tested him and whatnot and decided the eye had already lost it's fluid and he would be permanently blind. for about 4000$ initial surgery and 1800-2000$ of followup/postop care they MIGHT have been able to save the eyeball itself, even if still blind.. and that was about a 20% chance, and if that failed.. at the end of the week they's have to do more surgery ( 1800$ ) to remove it anyway. all of this being hard on the horse .. suffering.. multiple anesthesia's.. etc. ( plus.. he's an old fella.. 29ys old!! but healthy as an OX.. they didn't believe me when i told them how old he was... they said his physical health was like that of a 17-18yr old... initially when i told them he was 29 on the phone, they sugested putting him down as he may not survive the surgery.. ).. in any case.. weighing all the option, i decided to have them just go ahead and remove the blind eye.. and only put him thru 1 surgery and get him back to his pasture the next day instead of being in a strange place for 1.5 weeks and 2-3 surgeries.

he has pasture mates.. and now hangs around them more.

we had to show him the entire place again.. and move any obstacles.. he has slight cataracts in the other eye.. but it's the doc's opinion he will , all things considered, have usefull sight in that one eye till he's past his expiration date.

we no longer ride him.. just feed him sweet feed and alfalfa pellets and let him pull grass and eat hay and walk the turnout..

Great story! You took the right decision. Not so long ago, they wouldn't even bother calling a vet, they would have the old boy put down in a jiffy. My hat to you! :)
