Deer hunters that drive SUV's

Hitch hauler or small utility trailer. Biggest problem with putting it on the roof is getting the deer up there by yourself. I use a trailer because I also take my 4wheeler hunting. Deer just stays on the 4wheeler rack as I load it on the trailer. I can't imagine hauling out deer without it. At times I still have to drag it at least where I can the 4wheeler to. I don't miss those hunting days without my 4wheeler.

I can't imagine not having my pickup. I have a Ram quad cab. I haul an ATV in the back as well as the ramps, portable deer stand, etc. If I had to go with an SUV, I would certainly add a trailer so I could haul my gear as well as the deer. My buddy has a Ram pickup and pulls a trailer with the ATV loaded on. At our hunt site he unloads the ATV from the trailer, then hitches the trailer to the ATV and hauls his stand, other hunters and their gear back to the woods.

I agree, hard to beat a 4x4 pickup, next would be a small trailer. Just to many things you can use a trailer for as mentioned. I generally quarter mine, and put them in big ice chest

I agree a pickup is great BUT my 10 yr old dodge has 70k, while my wifes 3 yr old Forester has 70k... We never take my truck anywhere because she doesnt like how it rides..

my goal is to get something that we can use regularly to slow her miles down..

I have recommended the SUV and trailer option to many friends that need something for family transport but need the utility of a truck. $1500 will buy a quality 5'x8' trailer that will handle a 1 ton payload-that gives you more room and more capacity than a 1/2 ton pick-up.

I got a hitch haul for like $60 when i had my first SUV. I use it on the highlander now if i use it for hunting. It has no side rails but deer stay on it fine withjust bungy cords. But i usually have only had a 150lb deer at most on it. Not saying i have not killed bigger just not hauled on it. I have also stacked firewood all the way up to the back glass on it where i use to ferry it from woods to the house, never getting on the public road. So much weight the mesh metal is bent now. Its a bit rusty but have had it for bout 10 years, most of it was under a cover.

Where it also pays off is hauling a chainsaw, weedeater, and gas cans for use when i go to the farm for the weekend. You will be about brain dead after 3 hours sniffing the fumes the whole time, even if there is nothing but residue in it.

It also works as an extra cargo spot for a cooler or bags on a long trip. I have also used a small 5x10 or 4x8 trailer but its a ***** to back it on a woods road.

Like others have said i think i may spend the extra money and get the ones with the side rails that are about 10"s or so over the base of the hitch haul. But like i said i have never had a problem keeping them the head or body on the hitch haul. But it also helps if you have a beater of a truck like my old s15 jimmey where you just put the hoofs against the tailgate. Not thinking you want hoofs against your either brand new or 3 yr old x terra.

I'd go with a 59 Caddy. Worked fine in The Deer Hunter. :D

I drove a jeep cherokee for about 10 years and loved it. It would go deep into the woods and on the rare occasion I killed a deer with my bow I just put it in the back. You can put them on a cheap tarp or buy a pan type liner that fits in the back. I never had any problem with ticks, flies, or any other critters jumping off of the deer and onto me. Maybe it was the fox pee I used to use for scent cover
