One thing about all the hitch-haul comments. If you drive a gravel or dirt road (or even the highway) you can get lots of dust and road grime on your meat. If it's raining.....things get much worse pretty quick. The back of an SUV really sucks the dirt to it. It's hard to get dirt cleaned off of meat.

I wonder if you can buy a "body bag"? ;)

Get a $5 Harbor freight tarp and wrap it up. But around here we just carrry the thing whole, No different than the thing running around in the woods and sloping through a creek. I know other parts of the country are different. Good point though. The Harbor Freight Sales paper came yesterday. On the cover there was their Aluminum hitch haul with the side rails on sale for $79.99 w/coupon.

I bought the Cabelas hitch hauler cover for mine at closeout. It fits in the bottom of the hitch hauler and stands about 24 inches tall. I made a pvc framework so it stands up better but it is totally sealed and waterproof. Plus you could hose it out when needed.

We have used that on the back of my wife's SUV several times for luggage etc. for road trips and stuff has never gotten wet even in a down pour.

I even use the hitch hauler occasionally on my F250 (with topper) to haul oddball things like gas grills and stuff that is hard to fit under the topper.

I use hitch cargo carrier to get my climber to the woods and when i get lucky to haul the deer out. Works well, for my CJ7 it is the only option except deer across the hood.

Currently I am putting about ~7k miles a year on my truck - typically that is made up of running around locally (walmart, TSC, lowes) a couple times a week.. I log all my fuel usage and typically refuel after traveling 400 miles - which can be up to 3 months time period. So it sits in the garage most of the time.. The most I use my truck is when hunting season rolls around because I typically drive about an hour each way to the places I hunt.

We sold our camper, we now buy mulch by the T/A dump truck load due to how much we use, the last true hauling it did was a friend borrowed it to take his race car to Charlotte NC 4 yrs ago because the vehicle issues he was having..

So in all reality (except for hunting) I could have been driving just about anything for my needs.. AND we would be slowing down my wifes annual mileage by shifting the trips in her vehicle to something else..

I agonized over my decision but when you look at my usage - I dont need a truck.. Im sure as soon as I do sell it, something will come up and I would need it, but my dad has a 1ton dodge/cummins dually, a friend has a 3/4 chevy, and a good neighbor has a 3/4 Chevy and any of them would help me out..

Makes sense. And if you had a small trailer for ur SUV u would still have hauling capabilities for most anything. Good luck! (0:

For those that recommend a small utility trailer..

Where do you hunt? Where I go are narrow 1.5 lane forest roads with limited turn around areas most of the time..

I could see having a trailer would be beneficial in replacing a pickup, but right off I just cant see me me pulling a trailer into the mountains and finding places to park/turn around.. IF i was hunting farm land with big fields that would be ideal it seems..

Yes it certainly depends on the situation.

You could quarter it at your lease/property and bring it home in coolers.

I hunt on my own property, but the deer I shoot never leave it. They're killed, quartered, processed and eaten right here.
