Perhaps. That was the rumor but I never saw it in print. However, if true, that was back in 1991 and a lot has changed in those 20 years.

Perhaps. But, I will argue that Japanese companies rarely grow by acquisition of other non-Japanese companies. The company cultures are very different. Even joint ventures with Japanese companies can be wrought with tumult, the most recent that comes to mind is Suzuki and VW. Somehow the Nissan and Renault partnership seems to be working.

Kubota has been in bed with Great Plains/Landpride for a couple years now.

Quite right. But that agreement tends to be a North America-only marketing agreement for distribution of orange Land Pride attachments. Depending on who you talk to, there was great reluctance to do this agreement at Kubota's home office in Japan. Pretty much only a paperwork and paint issue...and I've heard mixed feelings about the results. The degree of complexity is entirely different when rebadging products (parts manuals, warranty, financing differences, and inventory issues come into play), co-development of new products (involves engineering & marketing research...let alone the sales forces), or an outright takeover takes place.

Fiat would be stupid to butcher the chicken with the golden eggs.. Their car brands (Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Ferrari) havent made much profit the past few years, except Ferrari maybe.
Same as why GM didnt sell Opel: the market value isnt high because nobody has money to buy it, but if they keep it it will give them steady earnings over time, without sacrificing business for buck$.
Ford however, sold Volvo to Geely for about 1/5th the price they bought it a couple of years before.

I can understand the rumors, I've listened to them for over 40 years! Some did materialize but not any where near what I've heard.

Why would they want to sell when they are making big money? They look good?

Will there be more consolidations? Yes!
