Actually, back in 1996 when i moved ther from southern Calif, i actually called the city to find out what permits are required to cut trees on my 20 acres, as i was used to calif's no cut policies (though at that time was mostly for Oak trees). They just about laughed me off the phone.

They told me its my property..do what you want with it.

AS it should be everywheres.

One thing I am finding, is noone realizes that when they put in the electric gate openers at home, they should also make sure fire/ems/law can access the gate. Nothing like being stuck at the gate while a house is burning or someone is having a heart attack.

Low Security keyed switches are available. Most gate openrs will work with them. They should work in the "open gate, gate remain open" mode. I looked in to it; my Mighty Mule opener is compatible

Of course, I have been a volunteer ff since '99, and have had a gate opener for 5 or so years... I just talked to our Prevention officer, and got the info to order that...

It gets worse the borough near me has a shade tree commission they come along and plant a tree between the curb and sidewalk on your property and you cant say no!

In 5 or 10 years when the roots push up the walk creating a tripping hazard the building inspector cites you for the hazard.
Then you get the privilege of paying for the repair too.

Those trees are golden you aren't allowed to cut prune or remove them or you get fined and get fined for the leaf litter if you don't clean it up.

Ditto. Or a small hole angled downward and pour coppersulfate in.

How large of a tree and what size nail are we talking about here? I have a lot of Autumn Olives growing in my back 5 acres, it is getting to be a huge PIB tearing them out by the roots every few years, if I could kill them using the copper method it would save me a lot of time. What about drilling a small hole in the bases and stuffing the hole full of bare copper wire?

that might work, but I really like the idea of coppersulfate. Even a good sized tree (15 feet tall or more) will be killed real quick by just a small copper nail, say 1.5 inch. If you can find copper nail coils for an air nailer, that could actualy be a fast tree killing method.

There is a rather famous tree in the Oakland hills that has hundreds of nails in it... some are copper...

The tree looks like it is on it's last legs and has looked this way for at least 20 years...

It blocks the view of several million dollar homes and is protected...

Do the copper nails only work in certain trees?

I have no idea, I have always been told a copper nail in a tree will kill it. But I guess if the tree is big enough, and the nail is small enough it could survive. I doubt a few copper nails would kill the old growth douglas firs we have out here.

As OP I asked about tree killing and I appreciate the responses given as well as your link. Made me laugh about the "mud" Ehow suggested...the waist high weeds in my field will cover the nails as well as mud will...to be honest when I saw the mud idea at first I thought it was to cover the nails so people DON'T STEAL THEM....given the price of copper today....:laughing:

Surprised me how cheap copper nails are, I can buy a pound of 6d nails for about $13 plus shipping...about 135 nails per pound...THANKS!!!!!
