5 GAL Canisters

I just use the whole spout junk as a cap. I get a can full of diesel and I take the whole top off and dump it into my tractor.

I just buy the blue kerosene jugs and label them gas. Their cheeper and they come with the old cap design. There's no durability in those new lids, it's ridiculous!

I heard all the talk about how bad the new gas cans were, but I reserved judgement til I got one myself.

They really are a PITA, the only good thing is they don't spill when transporting in a vehicle but that's because, as has been mentioned there is no venting.

I was watching one blow up like a balloon, thinking with all the technology and engineering that went into these things there must be some kind of pressure relief vent built into that wonderful spout system.
NOPE! had to manually crack the cap, what good is that? it will leak more now. Never had gas can that didn't need the vent cracked to prevent them from blowing up to the point they look like they could pop. I can deal with the pour spout, but what were they thinking not putting a vent in :confused2:

It should of been the first criteria.

remember a short valve stem with no center works as a great cap-able vent.

Steve,
can you please elaborate on this a bit more? I am having a hard time picturing this right now.
Thanks!

Drill a hole in the can and put in a rubber valve stem without the guts installed. It works.

So you pop the stem in just like on a rim, being air tight, then you can still close it with the cap?

Good idea.

Sorry to drag this out but I am not clear yet.

How does it seal w/o the guts?

Alternatively, drill a smaller hole in the can and plug it with a golf tee.

So - what is the purpose? Provide just a safety valve that blows out when pressure gets to high due to temperature? What about the other direction when it goes cold?

I assume you are more concerned about the over pressure then the reduction in pressure.

The purpose of venting the can is to allow air in to replace the gas that you pour out. You will find that the gas flows out much more quickly and smoothly with a vent. Otherwise, there is a lot of gurgling and slow flow as air is periodically taken up the pour spout.
