The purpose of venting the can is to allow air in to replace the gas that you pour out. You will find that the gas flows out much more quickly and smoothly with a vent. Otherwise, there is a lot of gurgling and slow flow as air is periodically taken up the pour spout.

Equally important is letting built up vapor pressure out.

I just use the whole spout junk as a cap. I get a can full of diesel and I take the whole top off and dump it into my tractor.

That's what I do with these new ones. Take the whole top off and pour it out. Got a nice big-mouth funnel to pour into.

Alternatively, drill a smaller hole in the can and plug it with a golf tee.

Ive tried this also and found i had a tenancy to loose the golf tee, espeically if the cans were rolling around in the back of the truck etc when they were empty.

I found that the valve stem idea stays in place and (with cap on) is still liquid tight to prevent spills while the fuel splashes around inside during transport.

This works great for me:

Someone told me its called an "Oklahoma Credit Card" - I found it under Siphon Hose.

I place the canister on the Tractor an shake the hose five times and it empties into the tank without any further energy from me.
