I was luckier. I went to JD dealer and asked if they could match up my yanmar key. They said we don't sell yanmar keys.

I said fine, forget it. Oh by the way could I have a key for my JD 850. Sure no problem. Works great on my YM2000. Yep, I dont have a 850...

There are several yanmar keys. Who knows what switch was put in yours? You can buy the keys at JD if you know the corresponding model to yours. Also you can buy them on ebay for i think around $5 shipped.

The funny thing is when i bought my VN recon i was given 1 key. It says Toyota on it? It will only go in about 2/3 of the length of the key. Went to Lowes had another cut and it would not work? Wonder if it was just a bad cutting job, cause it was the same toyata style blank? Anyway i just went to ebay and bought one there. I may have paid $6, cant remember, but i did not have to leave the house! Also a note if you search JD keys on ebay the same seller sometimes sells the same key cheaper under the JD name as they are taking advantage of some that think their yanmar key is rare (no dealers) and are just so happy to find it on ebay that the seller is charging a $1 or 2 premium for them!

FWIW - a photo I posted in a prior 'which key do I need' thread.

Original Yanmar key, a copy of it made on an Ilco blank, plus the key for the Hoye replacement ignition switch I just installed.

This original Yanmar key is the 'universal' one that fits many (most??) Yanmars and Yanmar-built Deeres.

In fact several year after this photo, I put that same key from my YM240 back in service, to use on the YM186D that I bought.

I have a 2210. The key for it is the same key that fits a JD 850.

The key you have on the right is the same key I have. The one sent to me from Hoyte is like the one on the left, which did not work. But I now have a spare like the original.

When I bought my Yanmar 2310, it came with only one key. I contacted Hoyte and they sent me a new Yanmar key. Problem was, it wouldn't work. Another phone call to them and they said that it was the key that fits the 3 cylinder Yanmar Tractor. Well, it don't work on mine. So, with me being the guy that always wants a spare key to everything I own, I couldn't except this. We have a long time Lock Smith shop here that has been around for years. So I went to see him about a couple of keys, one being the Yanmar key. He said that's an easy one. So he cut me one, but it didn't work either. I took it back and they recut another one. It works! If anyone is interested and has run into the same dilima that I had here's some info for you.

The key brand is an "ilco" model # is 1519. It is made for the Komatsu. But also made for the JD key stamped JD206, which may not be cut for the Yanmar you have. But go to your Lock Smith and see if he has any. Otherwise, I found the ilco 1519 here It appears that they get $6.30 per key but you have to buy a minimum of 2. My Lock Smith charged me $5.00 for the key and cutting. Hope this helps somebody out.

Thanks for the Ilco 1519 info JT. I've made 6 stops on a wild goose chase to have a copy of my key made. I just ordered 2 blanks from MrLock.com for under $10 including shipping.

Any local hardware store can make a Yanmar/John Deere spare key.

I happen to loose my vehicle and tractor spare keys last season out in the pasture lands. So, I had to walk home rather than drive. haha Got home to grab the master set of keys, walked back and drove to the hardware store to make another good set.

For the Yanmar/John Deere keys like a JD850, the key maker brand is "ilco" and the blank number is 1519. Thus, for $2, you can get a key made at Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, or the like really easy.

Now if you are sentimental, you can get OE keys from Fredricks with the Yanmar logo on them for a few dollars too. :drink:
