The other day I decided to wear a pair of pants I don't like for a day of rough dirt work. No hip pockets and front pockets too shallow to conceal my pistol. So, no wallet or pistol for first time on ranch or off, since I got my CCL over 2 years ago. A friend and I were digging post holes on my property.

After a couple hours work, we took a break and drove to a different area to start a generator and pump water for the cows and put out feed. Did that then started back to work site via a different road.

Sadly, we discovered the body of an 18 year old female who had been shot elsewhere and dumped on my ranch. She was obviously dead from an apparent gun shot and I was acutely aware that I was unarmed and defenseless if the perpetrator were to show up.:(

Lesson learned....even on your own property a situation can arise where you might actually need your weapon!! The one time I didn't have it was the only time so far that I might truly have needed it.! Previously have always had it for numerous rattle snakes and varmints.

ALWAYS carry if you have it!!

Sad story, but you are 100% right. The world is a different place from even 10 years ago. Drug crazed people are everywhere. There is little regard for a human life today.

That is crazy that you found a murder victim right on your own property.

Yes it must of been a hollow feeling, knowing people are showing up dead around you and you have no "great equalizer" to defend yourself with.

I was gonna say your gun wouldn't of helped you much after the fact like that, til I started thinking of how I would of felt, isolated out there, with a body on the ground. Would of felt much better being armed.

Was it obvious she was dead, or did you approach to see if you could help her?

15 ft. away in clear view off road, we both were convinced she was beyond help and I called 911 immediately. We stayed on gravel road and did not contaminate the scene.

Had perpetrator shown up, clearly would have been armed and dangerous.

Unlikely they would return there anytime soon after, unless they went the wrong way on a dead end road and had to come back through.

But if you stumbled upon the scene while it was unfolding, you may of ended up laying out there with her. Especially if you did not realize what was going on and you stopped to check it out.

You may wake up with the sweats some night, dreaming about the possibilities.

Absolutely right, John.

For those who have reservations about carrying, I offer the following website: Cornered Cat
quite a bit of information (not just for women). Some stats I gleaned from there:
Of the 83,920 rapes and ****** assaults committed by a stranger, 42% happened inside the woman's own home.
A very good reason to carry at home.

I hate to admit it but as I sit here in front of my computer, next to my mouse is a loaded 9mm. I just ain't gonna be one of the ones who are going to say,
"If I could only have shot back".
I know, sounds a bit paranoid. There have been several 'home invasions' in our area.
My son was always reminded, "Don't enter the house unanounced at night. I sleep with a gun and I'm damned good with it".

When we first got married, 39 years ago, my wife asked me to keep all my weapons out of sight. That was no problem since I already had a gun safe. She resisted all my attempts and efforts to try and convince her to learn to handle and shoot any weapon. Her resistance remained steadfast until we moved from Tennessee to Florida because of my job. After experiencing living in an environment that was riddled with crime and gang related activities, she finally approached me and finally asked me to teach her. I bought her a S&W 357 -cal revolver. I did not allow her to fire her gun until she became proficient in disassembling and assembling the weapon and learning all the other important factors involved in safely using and discharging her personal weapon. She aced her first live fire session, hitting the bullseye 5 out of five. She has a permit now, and even here in North Carolina, she carries it most everywhere she goes. Churches, public buildings, schools; etc do not allow guns on the premises. She does not carry her gun, because she is frightened or paranoid, but because she realizes that "Anything" can happen at "Anytime". :)

I am sure that was an experience no one wants to happen into. Sure hope everything works out and they catch the scum that did this to another human being. Kudos for not contaminating the crime scene, if I may ask, where did you learn this? Not many people would think about contaminating a crime scene without a law enforcement background.

Boy, that would be unnerving for sure. That is why I carry as much as possible. I just wish I could get a carry permit for wifey. But, living in "Marylandistan" that isn't going to happen anytime soon. Luckily I get to carry under LEOSA.

Remember, when seconds count the police are only minutes away!....

Here's the reason I got a gun. I was at home and I head a rattle / pounding on my screen door in the middle of the night. Sufficed to say I needed to get some clean shorts. It occurred to me right then and there, if these crazed, gun carrying, drug freaks keep rattling the door and break in I only have a butter knife to defend myself.

Come to find out it was a cat climbing on the screen door and suing it as a climbing tree, because when the noise stopped I peeked out the viewer and saw the cat hanging there clawed in the screen.

Next day when the gun store opened I purchased a S&W 357 Magnum.

Funny story but it sure taught me a lesson. Since then there have been several times my two buddies Smith & Wesson have saved me. Not shooting anyone just the fact that it was there and the bad guy knew it was there was enough to keep me from getting in trouble.

The Second Amendment is a wonderful thing. Utilizing that right will sometimes result in more peaceful sleep.

Wow! not an every day occurrence. No matter what the circumstances, I feel for the parent. I don't know what I would do if I lost a child, especially to a violent crime.

Not two weeks ago a 19 year old lady was killed sitting in her house being shot many times. Met a friend of hers last night who said some drug people broke in and thought it was her boy friend sitting in the chair and without knowing who it was shot and killed her. Then learned it was her. The best understood either her boyfriend or another of the gang who liked the girl shot and killed the person who did the shooting and tossed his body on the side of the road. She lived less than a 1/2 mile from us through the woods. Then there is the case of about five years ago that became a regional if not national man hunt of a lady in broad daylight being car jacked and killed in a busy Wal Mart parking lot about 4 miles from us. The guys who did that had escaped from jail in another state and were on the run.

It really is all around and sadly the root causes are not being treated in my opinion. When we think of a person as no more than a dog and when a community will get upset over a dog being mistreated and not even realize a child was murdered what kind of message are we sending?

That was a heck of a find! (I edited the part of the post concerning discovery of the dead woman)

Since you were on your own property, couldn't you carry openly? Maybe an OWB holster...or if no belt loops, a tanker style holster?

I have six acres next to a bike trail and housing development. People think my land is a park and my equipment is toy land for their kids. When I ask them to respect my property and privacy they get very angry. Now I carry my pistol every second of the day. I'm sure one guy would have attacked me if his small children had not been with him.
Better safe than sorry.

Sadly as I sit here writing this I also have a 9mm next to me. I also carry 24/7 because I don稚 want my family or myself to become a statistic.
I view my firearm like a seat belt; you never know when you will need it!
There have been many break-ins over the past couple years and this summer alone close to a dozen daytime break-ins. So I printed the following warning had it laminated and attached to the window of our back door so there would be no surprises to intruders.

WARNING!
BREAKING INTO MY HOME MAY HAVE SERIOUS
CONSEQUENCES
Glock G19 9MM AUTO
15 ROUND MAG WITH ALTERNATING ROUNDS OF FMJ & JHP +P+

FMJ WILL GO THROUGH BODYS, DOORS AND WALLS

JHP +P+ IS A VERY POWERFUL ROUND DESIGNED FOR PERSONAL PROTECTION TO EXPAND ON CONTACT WITH BODY TISSUE CAUSING MASSIVE INTERNAL ORGAN DAMAGE.

HERE ARE YOUR CHOICES!
(1) DON't STOP HERE!
(2) ENTER AND _ _ _!
(3) ENTER AND
GET YOUR ********* BLOWN OFF!
THAT MITE PUT AN END TO YOUR CRIMINAL CAREER AND OTHER
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES.

THINK ABOUT THAT!!!
