He there!

Chris from Toronto here.

I have spent countless time online researching compact tractors. Much of my time has been spent on this site reading old posts. I understand from my reading there is some heated discussion on the "Grey market" tractors. A week ago I didnt even know what a grey market tractor was. So please be tender with me:D
I am not 100% sold on Yanmar but they apear to be built like a tank and have good value for the dollar.
I want something small. 20hp give or take. 4wd would be cool. I want a loader and 3ph system. I want to run a fred hain subsoiler. I would prefer turf rubber but not sure if I would have enough traction to pull the subsoiler.
Also, Any advise on where to buy in Ontario Canada or upstate NY or PA.
FYI, I am very mechanically inclined but know nothing about diesel.

thanks.

Craigslist. Don't know of any dealers/resellers up that way.

If you're going to PA, give Gary Jamieson a call at Jamieson Tractors.

Oh ya, one other question. How do I tell the difference between machines imported in the 80's and machines imported last week and refurbished?

That's easy they will look new and have bulldog or vn loaders on them. They will also have low hours on the meter.

I just decided I couldn't afford a yanmar and a divorce lawyer. Lol. Good video.

Should I be looking for a reputable dealer that rebuildsin the states or try to find an original US model in a barn somewhere?

Craigslist, original grey import yanmars are easily found and you may also find a US model but most are imported. If you look at any dealer prepare to give close to what you could buy a domestic tractor for, way overpriced these days. I recently found a YM2210 with a FEL and bushhog, gave the man $3700 for it, runs perfect. Craigslist is your best bet.

The original US version Yanmars aren't any better than a clean gray market unit. I own two of them and both were pretty well thrashed (in appearance) by prior owners. I think Japanese farmers take better care of their equipment and their trade-ins look better than stuff that was 'run hard and put away wet' here.

Both my US Yanmars run like new, they just look like heck.

You will never see wheels repaired (multiple times?) like this on a Gray. But it was good enough for the good ol boy who had the YM240. (I bought replacement wheels!).

There are far more grays than US Yanmars here now. If you find a good US Yanmar, fine, but the odds are better of finding a gray.

Here's a Searchtempest Craigslist query that I customized for a 300 mile radius centered on Northern California. I suggest adapt this to your locale. I like Searchtempest better than a Google search of CL because it queries the various CL sites in real time. Google, in contrast, shows you what its spider found yesterday.
