Snow Equipment Buying/Pricing Plow on truck or buy a tractor

/ Plow on truck or buy a tractor #21
After 15 years of open station snow blowing with my old JD870 i sold her off and got me a cab tractor with loader mounted 84" front blade and a 75" loader mounted snow blower. I will be ding 2-1/2 miles of flat gravel roads plus my own place.

Up unti now, I have not been able to use any of this stuf yet, as i only got it this year. However today, our association called me to clean up about 1/4 mile of our gravel roads thats in the trees. Some neighbors were complaining that the 3" snow from last night was causing their cars to drift ....even in 4x4 mode. The rest of the 2-1/2 miles of roads were squished down by vehicle traffic.

Oh well, time to try out my new toy. This stuff is really wet (40F here now) and i was rolling up giant snowballs. But the thing worked GREAT. i did some in high range, but mostly in medium range (6 mph). cleared out the wet stuff without any problem. I'm sure if it was dryer snow i would be able to move in high range without any problems. If i turned the blade to too sharp of an angle it pushed the front of the tractor to the side, so i just used a slight angle.

My plow has a swinging side gate on both ends. I set the innermost gate in position and this kept all slush from being pushed back into the road. Without the gate in place i was getting slush out over the side.

I LOVE this thing. Now i need some good deep dry snow. I need to earn $$ to pay this stuff back into my bank account

i have both a jd990 4x4 with plow chains front and back and small pickup with plow, the truck plows much better its faster warmer and rolls the snow better, when plowing with tractor and angleing the blade in deep snow you cant steer the tractor, not enough weight in front.

That's when you use your steering brakes...normally a jab on one brings you back on the path...

i do that but after i straighten out and go a few more feet it starts turning again. with my truck it never turns. i like truck much better for plowing, in my oppinion.

As long as it can handle the snow...you're right.
The tractor should be used on areas or accumulations the truck cannot handle.

i guess it also depends on the weigh of the tractor. Mines a DK45 and is pretty heavy. add the 900# from the snow plow, thats and overall pretty stout front end. I found that if i angle the blade too much, my tractor did start to slide; however by not angeling it too much it worked just fine and actually did a wider path each pass. I moved some real wet snow, and made some good snowman sized round balls, but it did just fine.

I was a little worried that it wouldn't move the wet stuff too well, but was pleasantly surprised. And my cab kept me nice and warm.

By the way, do you think the neighbors might start shooting at me if I'm out plowing in shorts, t shirt and fuzzy bunny slippers while there out shoveling their place???

just a thought.

hmm, good point. I think bear season has passed. Guess ill have to go to the store and get a pair of bear slippers :D

Yeah, I got a pair on them...pretty warm and leave way cool tracks in the snow (sort of like the Yeti)...

Can you give more details on the Fisher QA plow? On their web site I can only see truck mounted blades...

thanks!

-Jeff

This is a custom fab that I put together. I opted for the fisher plow, I prefer the bottom trip edge over the Myers style. In Vt the snow is icy, heavy and unpredictable and most folks with the fold over plow style trip, eventually change over to fisher. Not saying it is the best it is just what has worked for me over the years.
