There have been several brand name aftermarket issues with both fuel and oil filters. The stock Ford product sold in the Motorcraft boxes is manufactured exclusively by RACOR. I have chose and recommend to all SuperDuty owners to stick with the OEM filters at all cost. I get mine from performance truck products. The prices are very reasonable at $35.95 for the fuel set and $16.95 for the oil. Free shipping over $50 There turnaround has been fast and I've never had an issue. Find the filters in the Maintenance area. give them a try.

I know that my owners manual is pretty strict in their wording that using anything other than an OEM filter on my 6.4 PS can void the warranty. They also have some videos on their website about how the Motorcraft/ Racor filters are constructed somewhat differently and when comparing the two there is a visible difference. For what these beasts cost, there is no way I'll put anything other than a Motorcraft, or at least Racor branded filter on there. I also save the receipts for the oil and filters and put the box tops from the filters in a ziplock bag every time I do an oil and/or fuel filter change. I hang onto all of this stuff in case there is ever a problem with a warranty claim so I can show that I've held up my end of the bargain.

I put a WIX oil filter on my 2007.5 Dodge, drove it to work and back (total of 16 miles) and went to remove it to install an OEM filter. It had swolen enough that the filter wrench that installed it would not fit on it to remove it. I had to use a strap wrench! I will never purchase a WIX filter again!

funny. on my 04 6.0 psd.. the only way I could stop fuel and oil leaks was to switch to napa filters... go figure.. :)

going back to the midde 1970's a law by the name of MAGNUSON-MOSS made it very clear o/e companies cannot require you to put only their branded parts on you vehicle. having been in the auto truck part and service business i have come to find out especially today the o/e suppliers job out most of their products to mostly branded products we know especially in filters you have wix baldin racor donaldson luberfiner and many others and some of these make the o/e filters we end up using and if you have a problem with a well known filter such as the ones mentioned here it is my advice try to contact the manufacture not the store selling them i think you will be surprised most of them will be most helpful in solving the problem especially with oil filters. their liability is high in this area they want to know if there is a problem

I am familiar with this requirement that a manufacturer cannot mandate the use of their particular branded filters, etc. However, they can mandate that you use a filter that complies with a particular specification. In the case of the Ford filters the Motorcraft and Racor filters are different than what WIX and others offer. They are visibly different in appearance, who knows what other differences exist. I don't think it would be a violation of the Magnusson-Moss Act for Ford to deny a warranty claim if it can be proven that engine damage occurred due to something getting through a WIX or other aftermarket filter that would not have gotten through a Motorcraft or Racor filter. If a WIX filter was essentially identical to a Motorcraft or Racor it would be a different story, but there IS a difference and it can even be seen with the most cursory examination.

i imagine it's more of the micron rating, burst pressure, backflow prevention and bypas valve pressure, and meadi type / capacity that makes a difference on a filter.

not what it physically looks like.. ie..cosmetic changes to the exterior that do not effect flow characteristics.

A quality filter is just that, quality. Quality costs money most of the time. Wix(Napa), Fleetguard, are all great filters and will serve you well. I invite anyone to carefully cut open their favorite oil filter next time you change one and see what you are dealing with. You may not want to if you use Fram or any of the other cheap ones...

Look at my screen name! I even named my dog Wix!
