i've got an old length of 3/8 that's been in the corner of the garage for years - can't remember where it came from. i should put it out if we have a garage sale. guaranteed there's one of those bigger is better people who would just have to have it.
I'd be one of those "bigger is better" people.
When pulling 100 ft. trees with a 70 HP tractor weighted down with ballast front and rear I've straightened out 5/16" chain so it wouldn't bend. A snatch block is used so the extra pull is just too much in my applications.
On non-critical jobs, like pulling huge stumps out of a backhoe hole, 5/16" chain has snapped with a steady pull - no jerking the chain either.
3/8" chain is now exclusively used when people or property (or liability) is involved. When a person's life could be at risk in the case of failure the extra heft is insurance.
Granted, a smaller tractor will not need 3/8" since traction and power will be a limitation.
