Do you need a CDL to drive a 73 f-700 with air brakes? The truck weighs around 14,000 lbs empty

You don't need a CDL just because it has air brakes, but if its GVWR is over 26k, or if the combined GVWR of the truck and any trailer being towed is over 26k, then you need CDL with air brake endorsement. It's the capacity (GVWR / GCWR) that matters, not the actual weight with any given load (or no load.)

Not true. If its for personal use put Farm Tags on it and you are allowed to operate it in your state up to 150 miles for personal use without a CDL. Heck, I drove a 18 wheeler semi when I was 17 using this exemption.

Well that's the problem, we can't just put farm tags on it because we live on the Ohio river in west Virginia , and we own property on both sides of the river (one side Ohio, one side west Virginia) so we cross state lines very often. The river is the state line so that's why we cant just get farm tags. We haven been stopped yet, but since the natural gas boom in our area, the cops are " cracken down " on large commercial trucks by doing random inspections and such.

There is no such thing as an air brake endorsement on a CDL in the states.

I held a CDL "B" here in Michigan from 1990 thru 2003, and I had the required air brake endorsement on my license then.

You likely had a CDL without an air brake restriction but there are no air brake endorsements.

Depending on what you are doing with the truck you made need to follow all the DOT regulations. What is said above about the GVWR of 26k being the deciding factor for need of a CDL is true and correct but if your GVWR is over 10k and you are engaged in interstate commerece then you need a DOT number and need to follow the DOT regulations such as commercial vehicle inspection stickers, log books, medical cards, flare kits, fire extinguishers etc. You do not need the CDL unless you are over 26k but 10k and up if engaged in interstate commerece you need to follow all of this.

I believe you are correct I confused a restriction with an endorsement have not had a CDL since '03.
