Charges for "non-published" landline numbers

We had an "unlisted" phone number for free for over 20 years by simply making up a name to put the phone number under instead of using our real name.

Do not use a name such as Smith or Jones because many people will call you thinking that you are someone else.

Use a name like no other such as Zxyrcke so people won't think you are someone they know.

I am not paying for my unlisted number, however I am FORCED to pay for a land line even though I do not want or use one. I cannot get Internet without paying for a land line.

Yes I could use hughes network or what ever it is called, from what I have heard the connection is slow, unreliable and even more expensive than what I am paying now. $75 bucks a month $25 which goes for the land line. 5 mg download 1 mg upload speed.

Phone company called my cell # a couple of weeks after I got service, they asked if my phone line was working, I told them I didn't know as I never connected a phone to it. They told me I really should. I asked why and all she could say is we really think you should.

When I asked the phone company why I had to subsidize the land line, they said otherwise it would be to expensive for the people that wanted a land line. :confused2:

OP here, may I ask if you mean 5 MB download, 1 MB upload? I have never seen the term mg as applied to internet speed. We too have to have a landline for DSL, which is very, very slow, 2 MBPS download, less than half that upload, and that costs $30 per month, plus the cost of the landline which is 70 DOLLARS PER MONTH IN ITSELF !!! If we could get 5 MBPS and a landline for $75 a month...what a deal !!!!

I live in next county east of you. Our cable company is Comcast. My phone number is still in the Frontier book even though I have not been on General, Verizon or Frontier for over 15 years. Apparently I would have to pay to get them to remove our number from their book. :confused2::thumbdown:

I've had a unlisted number for 30 years. It started after I witnessed a couple of guys trying to steal my car. They knew my name somehow. I was there when they got arrested. From the morning they got caught until the trial was 4 months. During that time I recieved lots of threatening of phone calls. I eventually unplugged the phone. The local police did what they could, but it was still a PIA. When I showed up to testify, the idiots pleaded out. They wanted me to not show up. The whole thing sucked. I had to pay a deductible, and while my employer paid for jury duty, they didn't pay for being a witness. They only good part was that the leader of the group, the only adult, got 4 years. He was out on parole, and was also up on charges of armed robbery. Nice guy.....

I get about 4 phone books a year. I am in none of them. I really don't want the books, but they just show up.

Same here...4 to 6 new books a year...maybe they want me to think my $4.95 a month is paying for something after all.

I was just wondering who uses a phone book. We, too, have 4 and I'm actually in one of them, but I didn't know that until I looked just now. Each time we find a new phone book by the front door, I throw the corresponding old one in the recycling bin and put the new one in the bookcase. Who knows . . . I might want to look at one someday.;)

Because thieves would call to check if someone was home we wanted to be unlisted but not at $5./ mth.
The phone co sales person suggested this alternative. (free)
We listed as R.Jones and no address at all!
Problem solved.

Let me clarify,
I used Jones as an example, I did have to use my actual family name but was allowed to simply use my first name initial.
In effect I was legally listed (no addy)but not linked to the civic number.

This was for our cottage which we only occupied week ends and the area experienced a very high percentage of break ins.
It worked as I never had the unwanted visits while many others had as many as 4-5 per year.

Also we never posted our name at the roadside as many did, left the gate opened at all times (to suggest we were there) never left a garbage pail lingering by the roadside either.
TV's and other items of value were never visible from the only window at which we purposely left the blinds open.
Where we are alarms are of no help as it takes the police 20 mins to arrive.
