I have a JD 49 backhoe mounted on a JD5225 and it's performance is disappointing to say the least. Only one cyclinder will operate at a time. It is just like my old pto pump operated 3 point hitch backhoe. Raising the RPMs only makes the one cylinder operate faster and with more pressure. On my JD 5300 it operated great(more than 1 cyclinder operating at the same time). With the JD5225 I expected better performance or at least the same. NOT!!!! Obviously there is a flow problem. Per TractorData.com the 5225 has a pump flow of 10.3 gpm while is the 5300 is slightly higher at 11.4. Can't imagine that 1.1 gpm can make that big a difference! The local JD Dealer can't explain it. They said they would stop by and put a gauge in the line to measure pressure, etc. Still waiting for them to show.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

The "add-on" backhoes available with many SCUT's; CUT's and utility tractors are built with valve bodies that do not provide flow to multiple cylinders at the same time. So, you can't lower the dipperstick while at the same time curling the bucket. Or, uncurl the bucket while swinging the boom in an arc - dumping the dirt along a 180 or 90 degree arc.

Construction type backhoes have valve bodies that do allow hydraulic flow to be diverted to multiple cylinders simultaneously. Therefore, you can operate the hoe with 2 functions more or less at the same time.

The difference between the backhoes is total flow as well as pressure.. and that relates to the size of the hydraulic pump (or pumps) and the amount of tractor horsepower available to power the hydraulic system.

You might find... (after the dealer checks your system) that your expectations are not in line with what the backhoe was designed to do.

Best of luck.

Ouch, that doesn't sound good. Sounds like you really need to know what questions to ask before you buy and assuming you are talking with someone that really knows his stuff. I'm sort of in the market for one but just trying to learn enough so that I don't have this result.

To maybe better clarify - my JD110TLB - is on the "bottom rung" of the construction grade loader/backhoe machines.

The backhoe valve body (loader valve body, too) DOES NOT provide hydraulic flow to multiple cylinders at the same time on the JD110.

But, the pressure and flow are high enough that the machine response for the loader and backhoe is impressive. In fact, the hydraulic flow and pressure is greater on the 110 than is found on utility sized tractors up to and including the 5075M!

So, just because the hydraulic response of a particular backhoe attachment is "uni-directional" during operation - does not necessarily mean that it is not a very capable unit!

Thanks AK for the insight. I am surprised to say the least!!! I would have thought the this would have been the 1st thought from the JD dealer. At least I am armed with some additional knowledge as the investigation continues.

Muich appreciated!
