What are the trailer dimensions and weight capacity? How much are you looking to get for it?

Hi amigauser

The approximate dimensions are 8' long X 5-1/2' wide - I'll have to measure it tomorrow.

It has a GVW of ~2600lbs and a net rating of 3/4 ton (but it sure looks like it could hold twice that. The 1st person down the driveway with $500 owns it

I would NOT bet my life by putting a fuel burning machine in my garage. You feeling lucky?

I always feel lucky but in addressing your concern about the exhaust gasses. . .

CO is a very low risk for diesel equipment in an open area. That said, my initial plan is to obtain two SS flex hoses about 10' long (there are two 1-1/4 exhaust pipes) and stretch then out on the gravel driveway away from and pointing away from the garage door. Have you ever heard of anyone getting CO poisoning from a diesel operating in an open area?

Lately I have been giving some consideration to putting the genset on 6" casters & rolling it out of the garage when in use.

I bought an older military 10kw genset at school auction for a ridiculously low price. No manuals. We bought two new batteries, put in fresh fuel and it fired right up.

Converted an old trailer, slapped the genny on it and away we went. First job we used it on was an hours drive away. After we got to the jobsite, we had electrical problems with our pickup / needed a new battery.

Genny ran great!! Hooked up the genny trailer, headed for home. Back home the truck wouldn't start. Needed a new alternator.

Didn't need the genny for a few months. Then, another out of town job. After we get there ELECTRICAL problems on the truck AGAIN! Needed another alternator.

Long story short, the genny was a positive ground system. We didn't know/ didn't even think to check. The two systems (truck & genny) were trying to fight each other.

Installed a throw switch on ground side of the genny - problem solved!! And the second alternator was still under warranty!! Yeah!!

Hi Willl

we each spent about $2k on them - they are rated 10kw continuous duty - there is a utube video of someone putting a 15 kw load on one for 30 minutes.
They are made by Onan, skid mounted - 4 cylinder air cooled diesels rated at, ready for this, 18 hp. 12.5 gal onboard day tank. everything was completely rebuilt 3 years ago & stuck in a warehouse - looks new

They auctioned off about 20 of them

Yes I am contemplating exactly how to exhaust pipe it out. The latest bright idea might just be some flex SS hose.

I'd install inside also if you have the room for it,, Take care with the cooling of the unit,, Install a fresh air fan to bring in some air for cooling.. I'd tie it in to a t stat and right off the generator so if it's running it can turn the fan on,, I know this because I have a 6.5 kw Honda liquid cooled in my garage and it heats it quite nicely in the winter when testing,, :D As for the exhaust mine has high temp rubber hose going to a wall cap.. It only gets 180 deg. and the hose is rated for 240.. again it's liquid cooled I'm not sure what type of temps you are going to have being air cooled..

Good luck with it and keep us posted,,

A couple that are old friends were rendered unconscious from generator fumes the winter before last. It was actually located outside of the house but the fumes got in. Luckily, someone came by and found them. She made it, he died. They thought they were safe since it was outside.

This is why my house is equipped with Co2 detectors.. One on each level and one in the garage with a strobe,, Just in case,, All new houses and any upgraded houses in our state have to have them installed..

My sympathies for your loss RidgeHiker. You didn't mention that it was a gasoline engine generator though.

Just pipe the coolant plumbing into the house heating system. :)

Nice buy on both the generator and trailer.

Edited to see you responded to the concerns of having it inside. Sounds like you have a good plan.
