Remember, Heat goes up so those upstairs rooms will be warmer than down, including the summer. Since your filters were clogged I would have the ductwork cleaned. Furnace model #s have nothing to do with what size air they put in.

Just that the air handler / furnace should be equipped with a 3 Ton blower

The blower is in the furnace. The size of the openings will dictate blower size.:)The 3 means it will handle up to 3 tons of air. Not that it has to be installed WITH 3 tons of air.

how do i go about cleaning the a/c coil? very good
possibility that could be neglected.

even if i had to replace entire heating system,
the deal is well worth it. there will be more
coming once i get commitment letter from
the bank. (did somebody say pole barn???? :D)

3 ton blower cage is larger than a 3 ton blower cage. That's why the mod #'s with 3,4,5 indicate 3ton,4ton,5ton depending on blower speed

You will have to access the coil box & remove the metal to get to the under side of the coil. Or disconnect the refrigerant lines & remove the coil

Is that the unit that sits outside?

how about where A/C hooks into the
furnace ductwork, is there any
maintenance there or any items that can
cause a restriction?

No, that is the inside unit (the evaporator). It doesn't need cleaning as often as the outside unit (the condenser) but if filters are left out or not changed regularly then the evaporator will become clogged with dirt reducing the airflow inside the home.

The condenser coils are much easier to clean or check for cleaning. Simply look at the air inlet side of the coil in the unit to see if it has a dirt buildup. Since the outside coils don't have filters, the coil acts as a filter and will catch grass clippings and other dirt which must be removed.
