Dont carry acetylene in an eenclosed space

Acetylene is one of the most unstable fuel gases available. Its smell is unmistakable, kind of a garlic aroma. Should have stopped when he opened the car door, opened the garage door(s), and ventilated the whole area until the smell was gone. Then, remove the cylinder from the vehicle.

Mobsters in the 30's and 40's used to carefully break the glass off of the dome light bulb leaving the element in tact. Toss in a leaking MC tank and when the door was opened, Ka boooom. ( Cheap Explosives )

Too mnay if's.

I've been transporting my bottles in my SUV for years with no iussues (and I empty and fill lots of bottles)

But the caps are on in transport, the valves are off and I drive cautiously.

Twas only a Jap Toyota anyway.....

Bet the dude has one helluva headache.....

More pearls of wisdom from the man who doesn't build anything.

The owner was dam lucky, and I'm glad he's OK.

When I was an apprentice we had one week classes and week practical work in a shop. There were two alternating groups. To play a joke on the next group we removed all the light bulbs we could find and used small torch to make small hole on the bottom and then filled all the bulbs with acetylene. Then we put all the light bulbs back in the fixtures and left the shop for weekend. Monday when the next group turned the light on all the light bulb exploded.

I have a friend who owns a larger sailboat. He told me that there were many accidents when the boat disappeared without a trace. Then somebody determined that it was most likely propane explosion. He said that sail boats have kerosene cook tops for that reason. Is there any sailboat/yacht owner out here to shed more light on the issue?

Toyota or not that was one powerful punch.. Good reminder about carrying gas and power windows..I use a suv to get gas in and yes if it gets the least hot, then you have vapor in the car...Still the power of delaminating the car, I figured blow out all the windows, but naaahhh, Glad you lived with out burns?

It doesn't take much spark if the fuel/air ratio is correct whether it's acetylene, methane, gasoline vapors, or what have you.

that looks incredible,
but the original post at the fj website
is gone :(

question for anybody,
was this a "fire" explosion or
just pressure release from the tank?

i don't see any evidence of heat,
at least it doesn't look like it burned
at all, i would imagine that type of
explosion would set all the plastic parts
etc on fire,

I imagine the explosion was very fast and short lived. Sort of an all-at-once situation. So much so that there wouldn't be much heat build up in any neighboring materials. The damaging bit was the pressure.

The sheet metal being blown out supports this theory. A slower burn would heat everything up more, but then the pressure wave wouldn't have been as intense.
