F-450 update (8 mos & 20k miles later)

The F-450 pickup is a fine trailer towing machine. I just traded a '08 F-450 for a '12 F-450. I was very reluctant to trade because the '08 was such a good vehicle. Only did it because I trade every four years and that's the only way I can afford a new one. I wouldn't have thought anything could outpull the '08 but this '12 has definately exceeded my expectations. Plus it's getting about 4 mpg better mileage.

Wow you guys are lucky and that truck is great looking. Around here the F450's 08,& 09's have been nothing but nightmares for owners, turbo failures, number 4 & 8 pistons actually melting , DPF's failing and plugging up causing major engine issues.Asking my farmer neighbor about his as I was looking to trade up and he told me his (6.4) have been towed and been in the shop so many times he's sick, he told me to run not walk away from any 6.4. Have you guys ever checked out power stroke nation.com? I have and you will not believe the number of complaints. Dealers around here have so many sitting on lots can't sell many because of complaints. Don't take this the wrong way not slamming Ford Diesels because I own one, I'm just saying.

There's been problems with the 6.4, but you have to remember that people who are not having problems seldom post but those who have problems want everyone to know about it. My dealer's service manager told me that most of the problems he sees with the 6.4 comes from people idling the engine too much and extending the oil changes beyond the factory severe usage interval. The oil gets diluted from the regenerations and has to be changed more often. My 6.4 was flawless and didn't sit on the dealer's lot for more than a week after I traded it.

Glad its working for you. Like said before only the ones with problems usually post. For example I had 2 Ford 6.0L trucks that were trouble free and know others with the same results but you sure hear about how bad they are.

Glad its working for you, you, that's all that matters.

Nice truck, and an even nicer shop/trailer. I could live in that thing.

Well I've had my 2008 F-450 for just over 8 months now and have put over 20,000 miles on it. I have been very happy with it. It pulls my mobile shop trailer very nicely.

I have had a couple of problems but they were handled under warranty. I had the high pressure fuel pump fail and the 4wd shift motor and module.

I tow a lot with it. My trailer weighs 17,000 lbs and get towed nearly everyday. Probably better than 70% of the miles are towing and the mileage average has been roughly 8.5 mpg.

I'm not a Ford guy, I would have bought a 2011 Chevy/GMC 1-ton dually if I could have justified the additional $20k. I think I made a smart purchase, the 450 platform is much better suited for what I am doing in my opinion.

Brian

what's your rear end ratio, and at what speeds are you towing.

if I keep my 99 7.3psd 450 UNDER 73 mph, she will do 9, loaded to the hilt. If I keep her at 65, she will do 10-11 loaded to the hilt, and 13 unloaded. I have a 4.88 rear... so no real fast speeds for me.. :)

I am happy for you, and wish you the best of luck that you do not have any major issues with your 6.4. You may want to think about a extended factory warranty just in case some expensive item needs replacement. The last time I looked on Autotrader.com, in 100 miles of my zip cold there was 3 or 4 pages of 2008's to 2010, 450's, many had less then 30,000 miles. The 09 Lariat I took for a ride had 12,000 miles and looked as good as new and was loaded with every option available including a chrome type diamond plated 100 gal transfer tank. This truck was at a Dodge Truck Dealer that sat right next door to a new Ford Truck Dealer now that causes me to wonder, just saying.

Chris, are you referring to your GM posts by chance? The only vehicles ever hauled on your trailers have been GM and maybe one Dodge..Never a Ford?..That's very curious.

Brian, Glad you're having great luck with your new truck...Nice rig:thumbsup:

You know good and well I did not have good service out of either of my GM truck. My GM cars were ok. Not spectacular but average or better.

I have hauled Fords, GM's, Dodges, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Kia, ect. I would say 70% of what I have hauled is GM of the 25 or so vehicles I have retrieved.

Sorry Brian. Back to topic.

Wow! A little sensitive, no?...All I've ever seen is GM's being hoisted on your trailer as you make sure that's included in most any car trailer post...Not sure I've seen the other brands posted as much...Just pointing out the obvious.

You're Ford, I'm GM..Agree to disagree...One thing I don't do is trash Ford. I might bring up a fault now and then to expose the fact that they all have issues...
