F-450 update (8 mos & 20k miles later)

We had a 2005 F450 4x4 C/C cab and chassis we convereted to a service truck in our fire department. With the enclosed storage box on the back loaded with first responder and fire fighting tools we still had a tough time with the rough ride on our poor rural roads. The truck mechanically was plenty powerful and flawless. We ran it hard for 30k miles and sold it to a neighboring dept who is still using it.

The magazines should review trucks after they are a few years old. I guess that might not sell ads, but I am not getting any 0 mile trucks anytime soon (maybe never!) I care a lot more about what 3 to 10 year old truck is the most reliable and cheapest to maintain.

I don't think many would argue that the new Ford diesels have been a win vs the 7.3PSD. I would like to read more expert comparisons of the DMAX vs the ford diesels. I am not a dodge guy but I bet dodge owners have an opinion too!

For example, I could afford to buy a nice 2002 or 2003 Duramax I saw for sale recently, but I am not sure I want one with that fuel injector design. Plus the turbo is far superior now, and lots of other improvements. Do I buy one in that model year range or save more money to get a newer one? The mid-00s had some cooling issues. New DMAX looks better than ever but only time will tell, and the auto magazines, they are not going to revisit those trucks after a few years to let us know if they think their "truck of the year" award was really given out to the best truck or not after a few years on the road.

That's what I mean. A lot of people who upgraded to the newer Ford diesels seem to be wishing they kept their 7.3.

The best thing about the 7.3 is that it's not loaded down with the emissions equipment that the newer diesels have. First diesel pickup I bought was a new '82 GMC with the 6.2 (that was a dud). Replaced it with an '85 Ford with a 6.9, then an '89 7.3 NA and a '94 7.3 turbo diesel. I had two 7.3 PowerStrokes, a '99 and an '02. Also had an '04 6.0 and an '08 6.4. Never had any problems with any of the diesels Ford offered. I have a new '12 F-450 with the 6.7 and there's no comparison between this engine and any of the others. Smooth, quiet factory warrantied power that you could only match with a programmer on any of the other engines. Combined with the 6 speed trans it would be hard to go back to any of the earlier diesels.
