Oil & Fuel Almost time for my 1st service!

Even if Tony wasn't running a special you would be hard pressed to find filters at much lower price. The hydraulic might have an aftermarket will fit, but the hydrostatic does not. Not enough population for the filter manufactures to go after after yet. Besides, if you buy everything from the dealer you have covered your bases in case there is some type of warranty question later on. Get you oil from him too, he sounds like a nice guy and we need to support the good ones.

For the record, I completely agree.

John (the Dad) and Tony (the son) run a solid operation and I have NO ISSUE sending people to them. They treated this n00b very well, and have been straight shooters every time.

Tony,
When I come over to get the filters etc. I need that little nut that came off my FEL when that cedar broke the hyd line. See pic, last time you were out you had the wrong one in your toolbox.

Be well,
David

Hydrostat filter was a REAL bugger to get off. Apparently it was installed, glued and welded on before painting. Also, don't skip tightening bolts, including lug nuts........especially lug nuts (experience talking here). Also, a pump to fill the hydraulic fluid is helpful. Good luck.

My dealer includes the 50 hr service when you buy the tractor. They came and did the service at my place so I got to watch, ask questions and get advice for the next time. Watching them take the hydraulic filter off made me very happy I wasn't doing it. He said some are normal, but a lot of them are "glued and welded before painting" as steve0413 says. Mine was crushed into a square before it finally agreed to part ways with the tractor. Nothing else seemed that difficult, just have the means available to persuade the hydraulic filter to come off. Must be a bunch of Koreans with arms like Popeye out there.

Can anyone explain why we need to dump the Hydraulic oil at 50 hrs, and then not again until 400 hours, and apparently never again after that.

Not sure I understand the logic.

Also, what kind of pump do I need for the hyd oil?

I'm off to TSC for some Christmas shopping...

thats not how it works.

If you look at the schedule youll see that you need to change ALL THE filters and hyd fluid at 50 hours (this first dump helps get rid of the break in fluids, any metal filings, etc from the breaking in of the gears, etc), then you change the engine oil and engine oil filter EVERY 100 hours, the HST OIL FILTER and transmission oil FILTER every 200 hours, and the transmission FLUID every 400 hours (that means at 400 hours, 800 hours,1200 hours....etc....not ONLY at 400 hours).

CORRECT! Most customers read that incorrectly - you read your manual. I do however regardless of hours (if less than 100) change engine oil once every year. Cheap insurance.

Is there any special kind of grease I need to get for lubing up all the fittings on my DK50SE?

Anyone got a favorite & good grease gun? Is this a good target for HF?

Thanks,
David

Others will disagree but, I've had great luck with Green Grease, it holds up well in wet and high temp applications. As far as a grease guns, I'm using two of the Kobalt air guns currently, I keep two because I service enough stuff to not want one to break in the middle of a project and one I modified with an extra long hose and 45 to get in odd spots on construction machines.

Fixemall,

Seems nobody disagreed!

Is Green Grease a brand? Where do I get it?
An air grease gun is hooked up to the compressor so you don't have to pump it by hand (I like that idea) right?

I have not worked in a mechanics type shop since I was in High School and sometime in the late 1980's or very early 90's I stopped wrenching my cars (because they got newer and too complex).

I am looking forward to going back to being useful and capable of servicing my own stuff.

So forgive me if my questions are a bit dopey. :)

Any high quality synthetic grease, and make sure you change your fuel filter too. It is a small item, but it protects contaminants from reaching the injection pump- one of the most important and expensive parts of the entire tractor.
Also, check battery terminals and clean them if needed. Spray battery terminal sealer on them, and ground at chassis to prevent oxidation/corrosion, etc.
If your tractor didn't come with the plastic ignition switch cover, get one to keep water out of the switch if tractor sits outside at all. Check air pressure all tires too.
