790 battery tray replacement?

One of the most disturbing things about my tractor is that the PO obviously had some battery problems...the corrosion has wreaked havoc on the battery tray area. I've thought about what it might be like to just clean it up good an repaint it, but i think thats just a band-aid approach...there has been some rust-through to the battery strap mounts as a result.

So i'm deciding about having a friend weld do some welding or creating a new tray, or buying one from JD.

Does anyone have a schematic of how this piece is removed? Am I looking at a major PITA to even get the thing out?

Today I may call the dealership to see if its even a part that can be ordered.

Any one ever seen a battery spill in these units? I'm on the verge of just going optima yellow-top for cold weather (an that will be the end of battery spills right there.).

I didn't realize it was so wide spread a problem!

I'll keep my questions short then:

-with CCA my priority: red top or yellow top?
-Which optimal model is going to be a good fit for the 790?

Red Top is what I would choose over a Yellow: Yellow is for deep discharges, Red is for starting purposes only. A look at an older Exide catalog shows OEM spec is Group 45 battery at 600 CCA.

Looks to me like the 25/35 Red Top is you best bet if the extra 1-5/16" extra width (really depth) is not a show stopper. (It is SAE post only, not one of the post and side terminal combo type)

The bracket is part AM876785.

and shows at this Deere parts store site as $50

A piece of 1/4" plywood with stops glued on wouldn't rust again.

The Optima site listed it as "25/35" so I infer it covers 2 group sizes.

New to site and having this problem - beenthere - any schematic for your idea with wood? -My problem is that the mounts to keep the battery moving back and forth on the bottom have rusted, any ideas on how I might secure all the way around without replacing. Thank you!
