On my property we had setbacks for fun barns and for commercial. We were not planning on boarding any horses but the setback for commercial was 200 feet so I set the barn 220 feet away from a few property lines. It is easy access from the barn to 5 turnout areas. If you are not doing horses then a centrally located barn may not matter. You can put up a shop/hay barn where it is convenient.

I don't plan on putting animals in this building but you never know what will change in 10 years. I'll have to check again and see if there are different setback requirements if i would be considered commercial.

...My plan is to stay at this place the rest of my life (29 now) and i don't want to do anything twice if i can avoid it, that why all the dumb questions.
Thanks again for the help.

No dumb questions, quite the contrary. You are asking all the right questions now and making sure you make good decisions that you will be happy with for a lifetime.

This kind of thread is one of the things I like best about TBN. You can learn a lot from the experiences of like-minded folks.

Does pitch of roof matter in areas that have lots of snow? I know you figure on live and dead load but I wonder if pitch is a factor as steeper roofs might shed snow.

I put my 30 x 40 barn/shop/garage right next to my home. Luckily, after it was built, the insurance company asked if it was at least 20 feet from the house. I went and measured it and it was 20' 2"... Whew!

I have a shed about 150' from the house. I don't keep anything in there that I might handily need. Mostly seasonal items and old "stuff".

Wow, 29 and you've already got a beautiful place! That's awesome!

I'm sure you have thought of this, but if you're going with a metal roof, be sure the doors aren't on the side where the snow slides off and blocks access. Also think of how all the meltwater gets away from the building, because the snow slides off, and lands right next to your building. Slope the land away on all sides if you can.

Bye for now,

At my current house, my detached garage (aka barn) is about 50' away, & even that sometimes is kind of a drag to walk just to grab a small tool or something. The closer the better unless it looks bad, etc.

No advise on your barn but what a wonderful piece of land!

Not as much where to put but just more of how to build.

Make sure you have plenty of space to turn a trailer around. Where I went wrong is I am on a hill and carved out just enough to get a good landing pad in but I can't get a 2500 w/ trailer turned around so I have to back up my windy drive to put it in the barn. You land looks flat so it won't be as big of a deal but I would still make a turn around - makes life a lot easier.

This is something i plan to look into more but i plan on having the trusses "overbuilt" to prevent any snow load issues.

Maybe because of my previous barn/garage experience is why it doesn't bother me to have the barn farther away. The garage at my previous house was about 125' away and i parked my truck in it every day, and growing up our barn was at least 150' away. I also plan in a few years (3-5) to build a garage next to the house, about 25' away, this is why i'm not trying to put the barn so close to the house.

Thanks, this is definately a dream my wife and i are fortunate enough to experience. I had the issue of snow sliding off the metal roof in front of my garage doors at my last garage, i will make sure this isn't a problem this time.
