The drill doctor 500x would work, but it costs $100. There are a lot of things I would rather spend $100 on. And since I only have one 14 piece set of split points, and a ton of normal 118 deg bit sets (which can easily be sharpened on a grinder), a drill doctor just isnt worth it for one set. I would rather spend my $100 to get my belt drive grinder set up with new wheels, and re wired, and build a stand for it.

OK but it will split point a regular bit any size

It took me a long time before buying the DD. A lot of money to do something that a bench grinder can do. It finally came down to a project where I had to drill out a bunch of rivets (couldn't use a torch). I got sick and tired of having to stop and walk back to the grinder to sharpen the bits.

Like Shield Arc , Was taught at a very young age by my grandfather to "NOT" sharpen anything on the side of a grinding wheel . Only took a couple of " Gibbs " slaps ( from NCIS show ) to the back of the head to have that sink in .

Speaking of old belt drive grinders , think my grandfathers is still mounted to the workbench of my Dad's second garage , have to check on that .

Still though , With all of us being taught NOT to do that , wonder if something has changed , or is the guy in the video link shield arc posted a few cans short of a 6 pack ?

I just watched the video, and the guy is using the face of the wheel, after he used a dressor on it to make it smooth. He is doing it the same way I do it. I think the next poster
"Orezok" is the one that posted saying he was taught to use the side of the wheel, which is not the way the video shows, and a more dangerous way.
I know a lot of people that use the side of the wheel for grinding, because it is more convientant than having to dress the face of the wheel, but the only reason the face is not as flat as the side, is because it was used. If you use the side of the wheel and it becomes "grooved or worn", it is almost impossible to dress it back flat without becoming a safety problem (I would think, anyway...). Makes the wheel thin and just plane unsafe looking. The only people who would get away with using the side of the grinding wheel would be in shops (home or otherwise) that do not do very much grinding or sharpening in the big scheme of things. A shop that regularly sharpens drill bits will run into problems using the side of the wheel in a hurry.

Man there is so much I just don't know. Thanks guys

Yeah, I felt the same way the last time I went to make a movie...
We each have our strengths and weakness in our lives. Don't sell yourself short, just join in and ask somebody who knows a little bit about what you don't know and then you will be smarter about it.
I don't own a drill doctor, and usually don't "drill" holes because I prefer to drill them with my milling machine, so I typically use two flute endmills, or center cutting multi flutes, which I have a rather large assortment. The drills I do use, are mostly for holes that are done by a hand held power drill. Those typically get broken long before they wear out, lol.

What is used to dress the grinding wheel?

I have a belt driven unit mounted on a bench you straddle and sit on. It was my dad's and don't recall it being dressed. It was use mostly for axes. It has two wheels for grinding one is in the same plane as the belt and turns very fast and the other is 90 degrees from the first and runs slower.
I have been using the higher speed wheel for the axes. I seldom use the slow wheel, have used for knives. I notice the large wheel is out of round, blade bounces on the face.
