I finally started my pond

What a difference two months can make. We have had lots of rain in the last few weeks and now Lake Marie is overflowing. Below's photos were taken on October 15th and today.

I also received an abandoned horse. Seems someone abandoned her by tying her up on an empty lot up the street. She was there a week. I have asked the nearby home owners and they don't know whose horse it is. Monday I will have to call Animal Control, as the horse can get hurt near the pond and house, where I have found steaming pies!

Booger is fully recovered from having Link Worms. He has filled back out handsomely.
Merry Christmas hugs, Brandi

I doubt anyone would find a horse around here... if one was to turn-up... I'm sure my nieces would adopt it... they are horse crazy and dream of one day having one...

The 3 of them, ages 6, 8 and 10 said if I were to get them a horse... I would never have to get them another Christmas or Birthday present ever again.

What's an uncle to do since I have the only property in the family where keeping a horse is permitted?

A friend out in the valley is paying $20 a bale for premium hay to feed his horses.

Boone,
I have been wanting to restock since Oct. But the only day I can pickup catfish is the 3rd Saturday and all of these Saturdays have been full. I will order cats in January for pickup on the 21st.
How does "Nellie Bell" look to you?
Merry Christmas hugs, Brandi

Brandi, there is a place called Oakhurst bait company in Oakhurst,TX that has kitty cats on hand most of the time. You may want to call them before making the drive due to the high demand right now. I think their number is 936-377-2654. They are open 7 days a week.

Thanks Tim. I will check them out. Oakhurst is a lot closer than Danbury. Do you know if they have Blue Catfish? Or just Channel cats?
I want to restock with both.

Well, it is official. I have a dam leak:mad: where my bulkhead and pier is. The pond was full Friday, no sunshine, just cloud cover and over a half of inch of rain yesterday and the pond is down 10 inches. I first noticed noticed water in the driveway, yesterday evening, where no water stands when it rains. I went out this morning and all around the bulkhead and tree, it is full of leaves and about a half inch of water. Guess I need to get some bags of Bentonite.

I gather it is a casualty of the draught.

My boy and I just recently rescued these 2 ole boys. Already have a friends house that wants them. Do you still have Nellie Bell think I 'd keep her if I was you.

Boone,
Although I am ready for a horse, my place is not. I do not want to get stressed out worrying about her getting into something and getting hurt. She is smart. She followed me into the barn's unfinished stalls, but had a hard time getting up the incline. That is not ready. She knocked over a bucket of tin barn siding scraps and could have ripped her leg open on the 6 foot grader blade cutter edge I have in there stored for a backhoe grader project. She did all this to eat Booger's bedding hay. She knocked my household trash can over 3 times yesterday. So............I would like to keep her..........but the place is too far away from being ready for her.

Isn't there a saying about a gift horse?

Seriously... if we were closer I would come over and pick her up...

Pic of our pond and some of my friends. :)
The dogs don't belong to us were just watching-em for a week till elderly couple returns from a trip.
The brown/white goat name is Two-Tone been known to chase and try to knock to ground a couple of my male friends from Church. Has never messed with me. Very terratorial. I thought it was funny they didn't. :)

Boone,
Nice pond. How deep is it? What is the elevation there? It sure looks flat. Do your goats eat everything?

Didnt make pond myself, fill for house pad.8' at deepest point in normal season.Have some small bass/bluegills/and occasional gator cottomouth from canal that borders property on side(dead end) not at back fenceline.
Don't know elv,I'd say house(pad) at least 4' higher than ground level. Goats are fed from field(grass, etc, products from TSC/local mom-pop feed stores). Also keep salt and mineral block licks in field. Got the goats sold(12), in 2 weeks moving (goats)about 12 miles N of here. Remember been downsizing for when I make move. ;)
Goats like horses showed you other day are rescues and some bought at rite price others were given. Within two weeks should have a rescue mini horse here(seen-em already-in good shape just a little wild and mean). :)

Weeks ago, I mentioned to my son that Booger would go bonkers over a radio controlled boat in the pond. I said this as Booger's soccer ball was floating in the pond and he was have a conipshion fit over not being able to get the ball. Soooooooo..........................my Christmas present from my son was a radio controlled naval river boat. Be careful on what you wish for or say!

Below is the best photo ever, next to my daughter's UT graduation photo. The other two photos are of the R/C boat pushing Booger's soccer ball.
Happy New Year hugs, Brandi

Our local weather man told us the other night that, for 2012, we have a 9 inch surplus of rain for our yearly average. Adding last year gives that surplus a negative.

My pond has overflowed numerous times since filling up after the dry spell.

On Feb.26th, I put out 17 fifty pound bags of Sodium Bentonite Clay on the dam areas where water was seeping. This after ripping up every other 2 pier boards.

The pond has overflowed 3 times since the clay was put out. At first I thought it didn't work, as the pond was still seeking. But it only seeped down to 2 inches below overflow. Before putting out Bentonite, it seeped down to 10-12 inches before the seeps dried up. So I know it is working. Now I think it is a mass issue. The dam needs more mass on it, so I will see how to add 6 inches of dam height under the pier. I think I got that figured out. It will mean ripping up most of the pier and rebuilding it.

Brandi, did you just spread it out on top of the dirt? It doesn't looked mixed in at all.

Correct. It is not mixed. This is the 620 grain clay. I told them my situation and they said the best thing to do is broadcast it and let it get wet.

I read where cat litter works like bentonite. Google bentonite and found that Texas was the closest place to buy 50 lb bags from Pennsylvania.

   / I finally started my pond #479
Good luck with the bentonite, Brandi. I hope it does the job for you. I really like the color your water is now, but that is probably not enough to keep down algae, so you may have to add some more dye.

Who is they?

I don't understand how that will accomplish anything. Betonite works by expanding when wet, and filling any voids that might be there. You have to apply enough of it to get the job done, which is why it's expensive, and you have to mix it in with your existing soil.

In everything that I've read about it, it takes quite a bit to work, and they always disk it in to mix it with the existing soil.

It's not garanteed to work, it just improves the soils ability to hold water. Compaction and existing quality of the clay is still the most important factor to holding water.
