Well you are right next door to TAMU so you have access to a lot of resources but you may want to invest some time to go to this:
Grazing School 2012 Texas AgriLife Research & Extension Center at Overton

I went a few years back and can say it's worth it. Mainly because you get in contact with so many people who you can tap later on when you have questions. There were people from just about all over Texas when I went as well as several who had been before and were returning for a 'refresher'.

Your place is looking great. Thanks fir the updates and pics.

Stan, in this part of the world, you can't go wrong with Coastal Bermuda, Giant Bermuda or some other Hybrid Bermudas. The main thing is, you will have to "sprig" it, you can hire it done, or spread it out by hand. I have spread it by hand out of the back of a pickup, then disc it in shallow (do this before a rain is best).
Hiring it out is easy, but of coarse cost.. Your extension agent should have some thoughts on it, as will your local feed store/hay supplier.

Pond is looking really nice. My small one is about 2 feet from being full, and my big one is still 4 feet down. I'm sure hoping for a wet winter. So far, it's been very slow and light. Three days of rain and I have 1 1/2 inches total.

Hunting season is almost over so on to the next projects.

I have about 14 acres of hay. Nothing other than cutting has been done for the last 20 + years. So i decided to totally redo the pasture.

Did the soil test so know what I need there.

I have to do a controlled burn to get all the dead grasses off. So after I get the fire breaks in I have plenty of friends to come help. I jsut told them Beer and Burger!

After the burn I was told to break the soil. I have a ripper and plan on using that. then a chain harrow to settle down. Then the lime. I was told by TEXAS A&M I needed 1 ton per acres..... then let sit for the required time. I will meet with the ag agent in Janurary.

I want to seed. My soil is sandy loom. I will add whatever fertlizer that is needed. I will assume after the lime the PH will be better... If not them more lime next year.

So my question is what kind of type and variety.

I have read about many but Tifton 9 stood out. as being drought resistant with low fertlizer requirements etc. I know nothing about grasses.

So any help would be apprecaited.

If you need any help let me know

WAY, WAY too much fun! Sometimes I wish we had bought raw land rather than property that was semi-established. My sister and brother in law live in Normangee, close to your area. Pretty country!

Well With some help we got the burn done Sunday. It went without a hitch... Started in small section

started with good firebreaks...

Then in a corner... the wind was coming from the north... this was the far south end..

firebreaks worked as planned.

We went across the field like this and then moved up another 20 yards... Sp the fire break kept getting bigger and bigger

The field is getting lime this week.. 1 ton per acre..

I will then break ground with a ripper, then dish, then chain haronw, then use cultipacker.

Not going to plant for a bit so will use round up to get rid of any unwanted growth. Going to pull the cactus...with an old fashioned weed popper...

Susan is finding lots of this.. and other cool looking rocks....
