Ever use a GM credit card? I have one. Had about $1,300 in rebate on it but occasionally GM 'tops off' your rebate balance up to $2000 or so.

When I was looking, just 'coincidentally' I got a 'top off' letter and a 'private offer' from GM. Both totaled up to just over $4,000 and with the dealer discount through the fleet department I got a good deal. Then since I had a real estate brokers license I got a 'commercial package' from GM which was a tool box (has a bow tie logo), a under rail bed liner and running boards.

That package actually saved me money more than the inflated price they had on it because would have bought a ranch hand tool box and lineX'd the bed, which would have been more than the cost of their free package had I bought it.

Overall, I am real happy with what I paid. Truck is nice too.

Never used credit cards for any purpose beyond convenience..Guess I could have saved some more had I paid attention to those things.

I could tell stories from the dealership where the wife worked for days. Funny stuff. Some is borderline unbelievable. You were in the right place at the right time when you purchased your GMC.I can't believe its been a year.

I've got a 23 year old that can't make up his mind about what he wants to do.
He likes sales and is doing kinda good at it where he is as far as his goals and commissions but the place he's at will never pay him a lot. I've been begging him to go to a big new car dealer. I think he'd do good and the experience and training would be great. Maybe some day he'll listen.

I hope you never expect him to listen. You will always be disappointed.

Well, the GM card pays you a rebate basedr on what you spend. Like Discover pays you a rebate in cash but the GM card rebate is a credit on a new GM vehicle. I pay it off every month but you still get the rebate. It is limited to some amount per year but you can accumulate several years of rebates.

We cashed in about $1,500 or so when we bought the Yukon XL in 2008.

Never paid any interest on the card because never carried a balance. Then when they 'topped off' to the $2000, it was sweet.

It took me a while, too. You too, probably. Maybe not.

Actually I listened to my dad a lot when I was young then stopped listening for a while then started back. I'm still laying for those years I stopped listening. :ashamed:

I worked in a car dealer throughout college (in the service department)...I can say that a good car salesman can make a ton of money...It requires much work though...Many of the good ones hooked up with law and accounting firms...Word of mouth and trust is priceless....Letting the next guy through the door "have it" isn't the path to success..Those are the guys that move a mile up the road within a month....

Many dealer owners started as salesmen....The good ones could own their own place. I worked for a guy like that....Just an incredible person in every way.

Thanks for that advice Tim. You confirmed my thinking. Now my enthusiasm is renewed to encourage him to do it.

Can you explain the connection with the law/accounting firms?

Law/Accounting firms....A bunch of people in one place who are looking for a painless deal and one person who will be straight with them...They can generally spend a few bucks too...

No matter what you're planning to buy, anyone ever told you to call mr/ms so and so and they'll take care of you?...Same thing....

Just harder to accomplish in a car dealer...Other people fighting for similar money.

That's pretty much what I thought you were referring to. The other alternative was some sort if fleet action. I do know some lawyers who have cars owned by their firms, kinda like company cars.

Thanks for the info.

I got 12,500 for my '04 GMC SLE with 100K on the clock...Sat on their lot for a week and was gone ...They wanted 15,500..Guess the value holds...I wouldn't have paid that though.:D
One of the dirty secrets of selling autos is finance companies often pay a commission for loans based on the interest rate. Say you are a salesman and have a customer talked into a vehicle at $13k but you trick them and put them into a 18% loan by claiming that their credit score isn't very good or whatever, some buyers just don't pay attention to their interest rate at all. Now the bank offering that loan might pay thousands of dollars because you suckered the customer into 18% instead of 9% or whatever he might have got from his own bank, or other banks the dealer worked with if they were honest. So the dealer really gets $13k + a large bonus.

Customer wants to pay cash or walks in with a pre-approval from his bank? Suddenly you don't offer the vehicle at $13k anymore.

Sad but happens all the time. I think this is an area where the imagination of lawmakers has been surpassed by the sheer crookedness of businessmen. Hopefully the laws get updated to protect clueless people from these practices soon.
