:Trying to decide if it is time for new tires on the horse trailer .

Noticed that 3 of the 4 tires on the horse trailer were looking a little worn.

What do you think, should I replace them or try to get a few more miles out of them?:D

To me, trying to "squeeze a few more miles" out of a tire is just asking for disaster and doesn't really save any money.

Unless that trailer reaches its end of life at exactly the same time as the last set of tires you put on it reach theirs, you will buy the exact same number of tires for it over its life.

Think about what happens if you have horses in it when the tires fail.

REPLACE THEM and not with retreads. $500 worth of tires is sure cheaper than losing a horse or 2 when they fail and flip the trailer.

The only additional miles I would put on those tires is the distance to the place that installs the new tires.
A trailer used to haul horses should always have good tires on it. The vet bill if a horse needs a checkup after the tire blows will burn right through any savings on tires.

Gentlmen,

Please excuse my dry sense of humor.

I have no intention of driving the trailor anywhere until the tires are replaced.

As a matter of fact, the local/independent tire place will enve come out, pull the tires and replace them for me at a very reasonable rate.

Thanks for the concern.

My horse riding friends as well as myself start thinking about
replacing horse trailer tires after eight to nine years.
After that they will weaken and will blow. Makes no difference
how much thread they have left. My trailer is an o2 GN with a 20 foot floor and the tires have seen a lot of miles, but the thread is very good.
I am talking about standard tire
size for most three to six horse trailers, 235-85R- 16.
These are 10 ply tires, with strong side walls which will take
sharp turning without pealing as the ones in the photo.
They are about 150.00 each around here but well worth it.
And yes mine are past due to be replaced. Going to get new ones this Winter
before our first trip in the Spring.

I am with you, they will go a few more miles, tread looks OK. You don't drive on the sidewalls!:laughing:

WOW I have never seen any separate that much and still stay together. Has the trailer just been siting awhile? You can just about see the air in them.

I understand you are going to replace them but if you blow a tire on a tandem axle trailer I highly doubt it will flip and cause all the carnage a few people are talking about.
