I wonder if those trees would have made noise if no one was there to hear them?

I'm not gonna touch that one but here's another question: if there had been other creatures in the vicinity (animals, birds, etc.) would they have stuck around long enough to be in danger, or would they have instinctively known enough to beat it outa there. I'm going with the latter.

The curiosity/trait to investigate the cause of the noise is also what led us to rub stick together to make fire, break rocks into tools, and turn oil into keyboards. Let's see those other creatures do that!

I have to agree with you there. I'm not trying to make a case for or against the superiority of man versus beast. I have read about how animals and birds seem to have a premonition when it comes to storms, earthquakes, volcanic activity, etc. The sounds the people heard prior to the trees falling might have sounded in the ears of other creatures like "flee, flee for your lives!!"

I helped my dad years ago do this a time or two. Well, ok, I mostly just watched and stayed out of the way. Very effective. Must admit on slightly smaller stumps though!
