I just bought a used JD 5105 with a 522 FEL attached. I noticed that the FEL will not lower nearly as far as the 305 FEL on my 3038e. I can dig a hole 3ft deep straight down with my 3038e loader but the loader on this 5105 barely touches the ground before it hits the stops.

I looked around for the reason and noticed a metal Lift Cylinder Stop strapped to each cylinder. I then looked in the FEL installation manual and it says to install the two stops if this FEL is installed on a 5105 or a 5205 but it doesn't say WHY.

Does anyone know why before I remove them and cause myself great pain and anguish to say nothing of copious amounts of money for repair costs?

This is a picture of the Lift Cylinder Stop from the installation manual:

Are you able to see your pics when you click on the preview button?
Don't quite understand why the problem you are having.

I can see them in my last post above. I can click on the bottom picture and it will enlarge just like it is supposed to.

Can anyone else see the pictures?

The stops are to prevent contact of the front tires and loader. 522 was designed for two wheel drive. 542 for 4 wheel drive.
If you take the stops off check for interference of the front tires turned lock to lock and use a jack to osilate the axle up and down.
The width you have the front wheels set will make a difference to. Your owners manual should give a maximum setting for front end loader use.
