Hey folks, has anyone out there used hughsnet for their internet service? and what do you think of it. My current provider (ibec) is going out of business, and where I live DSL and cable are not available, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hughesnet SUCKS..... not to be too blunt. They promised me a certain level... and i was paying for commercial service, and i only got 1/10th of what they promised me. After i signed up they could care less if i got service or not.

Check around with your local providers and see if you can get microwave service. this is line of site service. I get 4 meg download and 750 upload for $69/month. It always works...isnt affected by rain and snow (as any satellite service is). With a satellite internet you will have ping times of 200 to 400ms/... due to the distance away the sat is. Microwave service only travels like 25 miles instead of 25,000 miles or whatever. My ping times are about 20ms. or less.

It's better than dial up because it doesn't tie up a phone line. It's better than dial up because you never have to worry about accidentally cutting the line underground. That's the only two good things I can think of.
It's our only option other than dial up ( no cell phone service either). The minute dsl or something else is run out here I'm going to dump it.

Have friends who have it in the boonies . They are not happy with it at all and mostly rely on their iphones for net service .

When we moved here four years ago the only thing faster than dial up was satellite internet. When we asked the neighbors what was best they told us what ever we did don't get Hughsnet. They said that there was no service after the installation. They basically ignore you after the installation.

Personally I would get the Verizon MIFI, thats what I have been using for 3 years. I also tried the Sprint which worked fine ,but It kept pushing me to roam.
This is of coarse if your in a coverage zone. I'm on the edge so its this or dial up.

If Eddie Walker see's this thread, he can sure tell you his experience with Hughes net or can post his thread on it. I don't think he liked it to much:laughing:

As has been said, it's better than dial up, especially when the dialup is on very poor quality lines (two tin cans and a string?). However, their TV ads are downright lies.

We have had Hughesnet for maybe 8 years. However, last year we finally got 3G cell service and may be switching over to that. The only advantage Hughesnet has is their unlimited download limit from 2-7AM.

My son had terrible customer service issues with Hughesnet and has already swtiched to AT&T MiFi even though his contract was not yet over.

Pretty much what dusty3030 said, we have had ours for about five years since Charter pulled out. Cell service is p**s poor and there is no "line of sight" in our hills.

Our service is "acceptable" with a 1.3mg to 1.4mg download, but if something better comes along, we will jump on it.

Please be careful about comparing apples to apples.

I'm not sure what "mg" download is. We get 90 to 108 kBps (kilo Bytes per second) download when things are running well. At other times, it can be 20-30 kBps which is less than decent dialup can provide.

3G cellular data runs 70-250 kBps here.

OK sorry for the short hand, we get 1.3 to 1.4 Mbps download according to the system tests I have run; upload is about 200 kbps.
