What would you recommend for an inexpensive cutoff saw? Are used ones a big gamble?

I've had good luck with the best HF chop saw, once I got a name brand blade on it. Note that HF has three qualities. I have not hear good things about the cheaper ones.

This is the one I have, 68104: 3-1/2 HP 14" Industrial Cut-Off Saw

Got mine for $80 a couple of years ago.

How much of a difference did you notice with a "name brand" blade? What brand did you get?

I bought a Norton cutoff wheel at Home Depot. Big difference. I had to really lean on the saw to get it to cut with the HF wheel and the wheel started getting hot, the Norton just cuts.

Dad bought a DeWalt back in the late 80's, and I'm still using it. And I've cut a LOT of metal with it..!! Of course, that's not saying thye are of the same quality today...

Don't even bother with the cheap Chinese blades. You'll get a good cut for the first inch or so on the blade, then just dust from the blade, then back into more hard abrasive for a while.

For cheaper blades, I have the best luck with the DeWalt blades. I usually shop online, or go to Epay, and find a deal on a full box, of lke 10.

Wait for a sale and use the 20% coupon, always available at this site:

Actually, I meant the blade. I was in Tractor Supply last weekend and they had a closeout on a 14" saw for $49.99. I really wasn't in the market, but I decided not to pass it up. It cuts better than anything else I've got - nice square cuts - but I was wondering about a better blade, and you helped me decide. Thanks again.

I bought a Makita chop saw, and strongly agree about buying the good discs, the cheap ones wear out quickly and overheat the metal if it is of any size.
I use a spray bottle top cool it, but have given up on cheap discs.
I have heard good things about the Milwaukee

You might as well spend the money for a good saw, because when you buy the cheap one and find out it sucks , your going to end up buying a good one anyway... I have used a friends HF chop saw, and about killed it cutting 4 inch exhaust pipe... My Ridgid would not even have balked at that little job !
