Need to Hire a mulcher

thx yellowdog for advice. My parcel was logged for pulp wood around 7 to 10 years ago based upon observation. For example,the property is dense with hardwood sprouts 1 to 4 inches coming from stumps that are barely 12 inches in diameter. You can barely walk thru some area because of the density of growth. I am hoping that a 80hp skid steer with a rotary cutter capable of mulching up to 5" diameter will be adequate. (Its the cheapest hourly rate so far quoted at $80/hr). Trying to balance cost and minimize the labor of going back over the stubble with a chainsaw. I just want to get the slash low enough so I can get in there with my tractor and standard bush hog a couple of times a year and keep the the property clean. Time is not of the essence with regard to a finished pasture. I promise to keep my forum pals informed on this project. I live in eastern Virginia. Slash on the ground and stumps rot quickly. If I can get my standard duty bush hog over the slash,I will be home free for the future improvement of this property.

No door, chips flew out the front over 100ft. Any living object on the side was downrange and a target,too. To the rear was the only safe place. Mower has a chain curtain on the back facing the operator.

I think you would have gotten a lot more land mulched with a much better finished product if you hired an experienced contractor like Lotscapes, but if your happy that's all that matters. I was a little scared for your buddy mowing with a face shield instead of a lexan forestry door on his Bobcat. I hope he has good insurance.

I can tell you from experience there is no safe place front, side, or rear with a rotary.. No lexan, No safety margin.... Just a matter of time..

I like the way you keep repeating "it's cheaper then a mulcher" but was it really? That guy is going sloow and I'm sure I could easily double or triple his production for $150 per hour and give you a better finish....so is it really cheaper? not if you break it down by the acre.
