I see ! Doesn't this mod put more strain on the whole system or is it made to take it ?

Reduces the margin of safety (maybe), but if done correctly it doesn't exceed operating pressures.

Mines long gone but I shimmed the H**l outta it. I put a pack and a half in it. I was at almost 2900 psi. I did this to pick up
Pallets of wood on a 3 pt pallet fork. Never had any problems or leaks. It did scream though.

I backed it down to 1 pack before I sold it. I'm sure it's still rolling.

Huh ?, what pressure does the extra shims take you to ?, was yours that far under the 'rated' pressure ?

What do you consider "rated" pressure? John Deere says your JD 3005 should operate at a maximum of 2050psi if I recall. Your lines and cylinders are capable of 3000psi. I read that the pump was capable of at least 2500psi. Supposedly John Deere set the lower pressure on the 3005 because of its light weight - they considered the tractor too unstable to lift more. But, with a careful operator and ballast, it is possible to safely lift more, say 10-12% more weight, if you shim to 2500psi.

Maybe, but what if it was rated to that level to keep it from breaking its back ?

This ain't a heavy duty machine.

Haven't read of too many 790s getting broken...except for the front axles (seems like that was mostly due to improper ballasting)...one broke with an aftermarket backhoe (3PH type).

But I'm sure guys have busted them...good machines within their capabilities.

Haaa,,, but you have forgotten,,, I have a 3 PT backhoe,,, I was doomed from the beginning. LOL ;)

If it's a #7 'hoe, there was a subframe kit available at one time.
Mostly, with these smaller tractors, it's a matter of using common sense and not lending it out to friends....MHO, anyway.

HUH ! Why do this ? mine picks up a full bucket of gravel and seems strong to me, but maybe i lower expectations.

Because real men mod their tractors. ;)
