790 and 3005 Hydraulic Shimming

At one of the ports for the loader. If you only put one pack in I wouldn't bother. I put a full pack and 3/4 of another one in mine and it was at 2900 psi.

Was hoping for a threaded port on the tractor that didnt require purchases of fittings... any further thoughts?

Wish I had a gauge to have checked before and after psi. Where would I check psi if I could find a gauge to use?

Plug it in to one of the loader quick disconnects. I never check mine either...just went on the seat of the pants feel.
Shimming does help...but it's not going to make a 2200 lb 790 (or 3005) a 60000 lb front end loader.
You should feel a bit quicker response (at a given RPM...say 2000 RPM). One test you can make is, once the tractor is warmed up and ready...try to lift something that you couldn't lift before. If you don't have any such thing, just use your tractor and enjoy...if you're like me, you'll notice improved performance...you just won't be able to quantify it.

An improvement in performance across the board will be nice... a few months ago, while loading gravel, it could bearly lift a full bucket load. Not that I want it to be able to lift 2 bucket loads, but not struggling with one would be nice. A tad faster would also be a welcome inprovement. Still waiting to see... might get to try it out tomorrow.

I think you'll be pretty happy.
DO ENSURE you have adequate rear (3PH) ballast.
There have been front axle failures on the 790's...pretty sure most were due to excessive loads on that front axle. 3PH rear ballast (700 lbs or thereabouts) takes a lot of that load off the front axle.
BTW, shimming the hydraulic system isn't limited to the loader...you'll see 3PH improvement too.

I normally have my 5' brush hog on the back, but the box blade has been there larely. It is lighter than I like alone, I plan to add a rack to hold cement blocks to add weight and also be easily removed by hand. The holder would double as a carrier platform when skidding logs, I will also be adding a 2" receiver tube for chain attachment and moving trailers.

Roy, when I did mine it was mainly for that reason, moving pallets of wood around on the 3 point pallet fork. Big difference. Those are awesome tractors.

When I owned my 790, I shimmed the hydraulics to increase the pressure. I used a gauge and one pack of shims. Plugged the gauge into one of my loader's QD fittings to do the test. May have moved the gauge to 1/2 of what I expected…..but the results were quite good. Was able to lift more at both the loader and 3 point. As Roy points out……add that ballast! I had fluid filled rears, a box blade and hung eight suitcase weights on the box blade (they fit real nice and stay put). The weights also help the box blade penetrate the driveway. :) Ballast is your friend.

Lots of old threads on shimming hydraulics for these tractors.

Test run yesterday... pleased with the results. Time will tell for sure but one bucket load of gravel for the drive way was scooped up with ease... if I didnt know what had been done I would just think the tractor was 'having a good day', so the improvement isn't dramatic... but noticeable when looking for it. Before, it would struggle to pick up the front wheels using the loader down pressure with the bucket curled... now it does with no hesitations, as it 'should' in my book. Speed of action may be slightly quicker but I can't tell for sure. Its not like I timed it with a stopwatch before!

I am pleased... I will stick to one pack of shims... and add ballast to to box blade for sure. Really dont like the load on the front wheels in its current form.

Thanks to all for the input and advice... much appreciated.

I'm glad you're happy with the results.
As I believe I mentioned in a previous post...make sure you keep adequate ballast on that 3PH (I used 600-700 lbs of sand in a Deere ballast box). The 790's weak point is it's front axle...especially when backing up a slope with weight in the loader. The more weight you pull off that front axle, the better.
