Camp fire: Suggest chunk of steel to stabilize heat output?

Used this little guy for a few years. Worked pretty good, unless it was real windy. Made out of cast iron and about $100 at Lowe's.

Funny, I have that exact same one from Lowes! Sometimes the smoke comes out the side when I really pack it though.

I rarely use mine anymore. I built the stove in the pictures. It can be stuffed so much its hard to get within 5 feet of it. Don't burn it that hot very often.

Stove top was cured much like an Iron Skillet. Sand it, get hot, pour oil on it and a bunch of salt and rub it around a little,

We demo quite a few boilers every year, and have tons of firebrick that we pitch. Used to be we could sell them, just no market now. Make some calls to mechanical contractors or demo guys, and I bet you can get all of the firebrick you can haul off for free.

Get your wood DRY and keep it DRY. Camp-wood is usually split smaller/thinner and needs to be fed regularly to maintain a hot & nearly smokeless fire.

Soap stone is used in fireplaces and holds heat well. It is there for that purpose. I don't have any experience with it though.

just get gas logs and adjust it as needed
