How so I lube key locks for cold weather?

I had a good friend that worked as a locksmith, and they always said NEVER use WD40 in locks. It attracts to much dirt. They sold small bottle of a high tech lube for locks, a very light lubricant, not at all like fluid film. It was fairly inexpensive, like $5 a bottle. I think it was a teflon based lube.

wd 40 has never impressed me much with long term moisture protection.

I agree on WD-40. It's a great water dispersant but that's about it. I keep a can on the boat and spray my minnows fom time to time. Can't say it helps, but I know it doesn't hurt. For a better lubricating alternative try Justice Brothers JB80. Stinky, but it works.

I'm torn between using graphite and WD-40. It seems that many years ago I tried graphite in a little applicator and it didn't work out too well. I seem to remember a locksmith using WD-40 for a car door lock. The possible problem with WD-40 may be freezing. The winter temperatures around her range from the low 20's to high 30's. But there's occasional nights in the single digits.
I'm open to advice.

I use a product called Eezox. it's a synthetic gun lube and it's done wonders for locks, hinges, latches, etc. No residue slides like a hot knife on butter. Smeels a little, but the smell is sweet in a way.

I picked up some PB Garage Door Lubricant to put in the locks of our '97 Dodge 1500. The drivers gets stuck in the winter as the little flap doesn't close well.
So far it has worked well (knock on wood).

I use gear oil on padlocks, and graphite powder on door locks. Seems to work fine.

Though I haven't had to do it lately, years ago I use a syringe to inject a couple cc of straight anti freeze into my locks during the coldest part of winter. As I remember it worked ok, but it was a long time ago.

I always used wd40, I found after it dries it leaves a silicone film behind. Also I used it on the rubber door seals so as to keep them from freezing.Ct. weather with always getting a thaw an hard freeze at night.

We had a we used on the RV lot (anybody that knows rv's know how much all the locks suck) and he recommended only using Tri Flow in locks. A little squirt will do. It's an aerosol spray that goes in a liquid then turns into a very light grease/protective film. Teflon based, so probably the same stuff you were thinking of.

On a side note, it also comes in little pen drop applicators with a needle that makes it perfect for firearms.

I'll bite, why do you spray your minnows with WD-40?
