Go to the website of metal supermarket. See if they have a store there. They have good prices, and will cut the metal to the exact size you need, FREE. I love how you can go in and get all the parts for your project pre-cut, no charge. All I have to do is tack and weld.

Look up welding shops in your local yellow pages. They will have a source or they might be a source especially if you're interested in small quantities.

if smal qty.. places like lowes and HD have weldable angle and flat.. mind you it is likely 1.5X the price of buying it at a bulk supplier.. however.. on the days you just neecod 2 more foot of angle and lowes is 5m away and the supplier is in the next town.. you pay the 1.5x premium for convienience...

Apparently it pays to shop around. I bought steel from metalsdepot.com once & thought maybe it was high, not that I'm an expert on steel pricing.

Just did an apples-apples (I think) price check on a 4' long 3/4" dia. hot-rolled A-36 steel round: $8.24 from metalsdepot.com vs $22.74 from metalsupermarkets.com

Am I doing something wrong??

Here's a screenshot of the two:

I have a good sized welding shop near me, these guys realized there was a market for steel so they started selling. 2 brothers running it, their grand father started the welding shop year ago. They also collect (hoard) old steel from demo jobs they do, so they have a huge yard full of all kinds of steel components. They will sell what ever you want, used steel or brand new steel.

That outside yard is where you will find the hard to find stuff, and just walking around in there you will get ideas on how to complete what ever project your working on.

Any welding shop is gonna have all the basic beams, bars, angles, plates, etc. You may pay a little premium to get them to sell their stock.

Metalsupermarkets is interesting. We have 3 in the Twin Cities. I work with the closest one. When I priced stuff on line and then called them the first time, the guy laughed and said "Always call us - we are always cheaper in person than the website. They gotta pay for that overhead somehow..." And it's true. They have been much better dealing direct as I have have cross-checked the prices before going there. I don't use them for everything, but I do check them regularly as their prices are not bad.

What overhead? Isn't that backwards? Seems like a website & a warehouse would be lower overhead than a bricks-&-mortar retail store with clerks, etc.?
