Kind of an aside here, but how big of a piece of land (max size, feasibly) would you use one of those $100 EarthWay planters for? I don't want to drop a big chunk on a 3ph planter I may or may not continue to use on about an acre or so (at this point in time)

I have one of those Earthway seeders and they are totally worth the money. I can't tell you how much time I've saved, not to mention this baby will plant your seeds at the right depth. The plates tend to plant on the heavier side, I just tape off every other hole.

I grew a lot of sweet corn last year, for the first time in ages. It's a good drawing card to get the cars to stop at the stand. I made some money on it, but a whole lot more on carrots, broccoli, cucumbers, squash and especially, of all things, cabbage.

We've always been "full menu" truck farmers. We've always grown a couple dozen different things to make the stand, whether out front or at market, look appealing. You just don't know what folks like until they pick something off the stand and order more if they like it. We were never interested in being "uni-crop".

Plus, we eat all these different things ourselves, of course. Thus, the variety.

I'd love to have a "full menu" stand but just do not have the time. I am sure you also man your stand. I work full time and my kids have full time summer jobs as well so ours is very much morning and evening only.

I concur the Earthway Planter is a fantastic planter for the money. I've seen posts on-line from users who have made modifications to improve the functionality of Earthway Planter.

Thanks for the information and suggestions. I like that Earthway planter. I'll probably start small and see how it works for me.

I'm thinking of about a half acre of sweet corn separate from my primary garden which will be peas, beans, tomatoes, squash, pumpkins and cukes. I might start a strawberry patch as well. Maybe some onions and potatoes too. I love fresh veggies.

We'd have no garden without the poly fencing. For three years now, it's been 100% effective, knock on the wood poles holding it up.

Do you leave the poly and posts up all year?

No, they're so easy to take down. I just use zip tie wraps, one snip and they're gone. The posts are only in the ground 18-20 inches. I also want the poly to last, and want to limit the UV exposure the other 7 months of the year.

Also, with the fencing down, I can just get out there in fall and turn the soil over for winter, and prep it for leaves, chicken litter and stuff I spread all fall and winter.
