John Deere turns 175!

I ran a across this visiting the Deere site today. An American company the last 175 years. Very interesting story. It all started with a better idea for a horse drawn plow, and to look at the machines today, they have come a long way. I took this little snippet out for what their future looks like below.

Deere is listed among the 50 most-admired companies by Fortune magazine and ranked as one of the 100 best global brands by a leading brand-consulting firm. As a sign of the company's emphasis on global growth, sales outside the U.S. and Canada jump by 38%. The company begins work on plants to produce engines, loaders, and ag equipment in China and tractor and combine factories in India. In addition, two factories are planned for Brazil - one for backhoes and wheel loaders, and a joint venture for excavators. John Deere Domodedovo, Russia, begins building forestry skidders and forwarders, and other facilities are expanded in India, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, and the U.S.

Yes indeed. John Deere has reached and spread out globally for quite some time. I just wish that more of their products were made in the "Good Old U.S.A".

Your right on the money. I think some Americans like myself are starting to pursue USA made products, maybe John Deere will recognize this and change there business plan to make more stuff here.

John Deere will probably continue to do what makes the best business sense. That is most likely to continue to expand world wide markets. And THAT means manufacturing products around the world. The two markets emerging as those with the most potential are China and India. Long story short, Deere would be left out of those markets without a substancial manufacturing base in those countries. Doubtful Deere will sacrifice 40% to 60% of their business in order to POSSIBLY increase US sales by 5% or 10%. It just doesn't pencil out. For the forseeable future, you'll have to be satisfied with the fact Deere and AGCO are US based companies that need to operate in a global rat race.

As a stock holder in both Deere and AGCO, I've tried (unsuccessfully) to get a picture of how much stock (in either) is controlled by non-US residents. I'm sure those facts are a fluid, moving target at best.

My retirement checks come from Boeing, a company that takes considerable flak periodically for manufacturing large chunks of their products overseas. But you can't book orders for large commercial aircraft in that market unless the plane contains parts manufactured in a customer's country (a process called "offsetting"). Look at the heat Apple is getting for manufacturing their epad/ebook/ewhatever stuff overseas.
