Been looking to buy a smaller grain drill to plant alfalfa starting with two acres and eventually will be put to work on about 30. Had a couple come across the "local" classifieds but were not close enough for me to get there before someone else beat me to them. Had my eye on one only saying it is a Case 8 foot and was used to plant peas within the last year. I'm going to attach the pictures he has in his ad. According to him everything is in working order and would be field ready. He is asking $650 but it would also include a 4 hour round trip to get to him. I'm not sure that the price is a killer deal but I would be ok if it is reasonable and fair. Any opinions on what model it might be, what I should be looking for if I go 'look to buy' it and if the price seems about right or what a fair offer might be?
Thanks all

I would check the chains wheel bearings and. The. Lifter upper mechanisms. Those were all worn on mine

Where are you located? Here in S.Tx these drills like in the pic go for 1500.00-2500.00 on average?

Do you have one similar? If so what would I be looking at for a model number or even expecting for # of drop tubes/spacing? Would this be a single disc or double? I couldn't tell by the not so good pics he had and I have no idea.

Don't know if this makes any difference to you but since you are wanting to plant alfalfa thought I should point this out. I do not see the grass/small seed box. Cant enlarge the photo any to tell for certain.

It does have the grass boxes. I had to poach the pics from his ad so I agree, they aren't the best quality.

Would the case drills be any more or less problematic or expect to find anything different than a similar aged JD/Van Brunt or MM drill in the maintenance area.

They all operate basically the same. The main difference will be in openers if they would happen to have double disk openers. Believe most you mentioned will be single disk openers but someone else may have the info for certain.

Unless that drill comes with grass seeding boxes, it won't work for alfalfa seed which is very small size seed. You can plant larger size seed (oats, wheat, etc) with the fertilizer box on that Case drill. My neighbor farms 30 acres of irrigated alfalfa and uses an old Brillion grass seeder for planting.

A few years ago I bought a pair of old Minneapolis Moline P3-6 grain drills (10 ft wide, 20 drops, single disc openers, $275 for the pair) and restored one of them using parts from both. Plant oats with the large box.

This year I planted a cover crop of lana vetch/annual ryegrass (both have small seeds) using two of the 5-ft wide grass seed boxes that came with those MM drills. I want the seed to be dropped uniformly in a line about 10-ft wide instead of in rows 6" apart which is how they work when attached to the MM drill. So I built a custom drop seeder using those boxes.

Good luck
