Rotary Cutter Large Area Mowing

   / Large Area Mowing #31
for large open mowing.. anything else is brutally time consuming, vs a nice large batwing.. etc..

if you are around horse farms.. you can sometimes get good used batwings pretty cheap when they turn over their equipment as it nears it's warranty end, and the dealers hit them up to sell them new stuff.

that's how I got my jd 1517 batwing... even came with a new gearbox on one wing too!

Being grossly misslead AS you are inferrring and offering ones opinion based on ones 30 plus years personal experience with finish flail mowers are two different things.

A commercial mowing enterprise covering huge areas of highway median and verges and an end user with a specific area that will be decreasing over time due to potential housing development are two different things. Only he knows what the conditions are or may be on this is property not including any hidden objects that were dumped there or can be impacted and thrown by a rotary mower or rotary brush mower.

My simply describing the Vrisimo line of flail mowers or flail shredders previously as an option for what he needs was only a courtesy to him or her. I dont have a financial interest in any of this nor can one honestly compare highway mowing operations with an end user with a limited area of mowing.

The Vrisimo organisation has been building a high quality line of flail mowers for many years and the 6 Super" model flail mowers were rated with 40 to 60 horse power tractors for all six units.

The OP requested info on "large area mowing". Your "opinion" (as biased as it obviously seems) isn't based on "large area mowing" to the scale I know it.

No one suggested you have a "financial interest". From all appearances, it seems to be more of a result of OCD.....

Again, as it has been expressed numerous times, a rotary mower will require less hp per ft in same conditions as a flail. That is a well documented FACT.

Apparently you failed (AGAIN...) to read (comprehend) my post. In addition to thousands of hours mowing highway right-of-ways, we mow (literally) thousands of acres of abandon farm land, large tracts of commercial real estate, as well as waterways and filter strips on my far. My experience isn't nearly so limited as what you describe yours as.....

Offering ones opinion based on limited experience with flails, even spred across 30 years has little if any comparison to the thousands upon thousands of hours of experience I've accumulated with BOTH types of mowers. Obviously, you value your opinion, however limited your actual hands on knowledge is. Mine on the other hand is validated by the FACT that over 95% of large scale commercial mowing is done with rotary mowers, as well as my own experiences. It's not just "my opinion".....It's the opinion of professionals across the country.

Why does every pro flail mower person automatically site the reason to get a flail over a rotary is because a rotary can "sling objects from underneath the mower." If you don't think a flail can throw things your kidding yourself. Most flails have a roller on the back that does a good job at stopping things but they also have about an 8" gap above that to shed clippings that lots of hard objects can come flying out at very high rates of speed. Plus if you think about it, with a flail you've got all those knives spinning vertically in line with tractor operator, if one of them breaks free it has to go somewhere. I've seen used high end Alamo flails beat to he!! just like a well abused rotary. I'm not bashing flails, I simply think they can be just as dangerous as other mowers.

Ah, the simple pleasure of watching a flail vs rotary mower debate unfold.

Personally, I like the concept of a flail, but I got a 5' rotary mower for $75 (and a few hours of bushhogging) and it works well.
I have chains on the back and enough overhang on the front to make it hard for a flying object to come up at me. Not perfect, but it works well for what I have to do.

Had no idea this was such a touchy topic:laughing: Kinda like a VS vs Zeebass debate... nevermind that's another unrelated topic:)

Now I've got to decide if the bushhog 2212 is worth the $$. This would be an easier decision if I had a bigger tractor!

2 i bought I got at heavy discount.

can't see paying that kind of cabbage a flail cost when a rotary works in it's place on my property...

Flail v rotary cutter v MMM v RFM, dino v synthetic, replace fluid at 50 hours, gear v HST, new v used never seem to end well. I have yet to understand why discussions among seemingly intelligent people who share common interest can deteriorate into this.
