Chipper Trouble Connecting Bearcat to PTO

The way I do mine is to shut the tractor down. This allows me to turn the tractor pto shaft CCW easily. I hold the chipper shaft in position and push in with the right hand not worrying about the ring while turning the tractor pto shaft with my left hand fingers. When the splines are aligned the chipper shaft will start to seat. Then use nspec's method of hooking your thumbs or heels of your palms on the coupling and pulling back the ring with the fingers of both hands and push it home. In some ways it is easier than the button type. Just be sure you have it started before you start pulling the ring back.

I'm guessing that the plastic protective collar on the PTO shaft has been removed to be able to do the described procedure.

It may be a trade-off worth it to some.

No, it is in place where it belongs. It may be that I hook the heals of my palms around the plastic cover and not the coupling as I said. It's been a few months since I've done it.
The protective cover above the tractor PTO output shaft is also in place where it belongs so I have to reach up from underneath with my fingers in order to turn the shaft. But it turns easy.

Hey, Guys;
Great feedback, thx for all your input. I took the shaft to the dealer to get help, and he showed me that you don't depress the metal ring from the chipper side toward the tractor, you push back the plastic ring toward the chipper. So now I know why the balls weren't retracting enough. Just got home and it's dark so I can't try it tonight, but I will tomorrow.

I'm still worried about the alignment issues, and the push/pull deal referred to by SPYDRLK, but for now I'll just take it one PIA at a time. Fortunately, my Kubota's PTO shaft will turn when I torque it by hand.

Thx again.

Randy
