Missouri Conservation insisted for the last 15 years or so that we did not have mountain lions, then changed their tune to "might occasionally have one passing thru." Just in the last year or so have they conceded we have a small wild population. I think most of us was pretty sure of that a dozen years ago - too many people were reporting sightings.
A year ago, one was shot a killed by LaPlata, in north Missouri, and two weeks prior to that, one was shot about ten miles from me - near KC. Add the one trapped near the bootheel, that pretty well covers our state.
Concerning wildlife crossing water, a few years ago, my brother and I was blasting down Table Rock Lake at daybreak. Right in the middle of the lake, a good 1/4 mile or better from the shore was a big 10 pt buck. Nearly hit him, not something you expect to see in 110' of water - especially so far from shore. Could a mountain lion swim the Mississippi...I could believe it.
