Cougar killing horses

I have no idea if a cougar would attack a horse, except that I read an article that some mustangs that were trained and used by a western sheriffs department stopped at a blind turn in a canyon, more domesticated mounts kept going only to discover a cougar waiting around the bend. In my humble ill informed opinion, did the mustangs remember something from past experience.
